Weed Control Featured at Open Garden Day
Weed....a four letter word for every gardener!!! How to control weeds is the focus of the Calaveras County Master Gardeners March 22 Open Garden Day. Now that spring is here most gardeners are eager to prepare their gardens for spring planting. However, one of the first things greeting them in the garden are weeds....
This means countless hours weeding - not a chore any gardener enjoys. What if there is a way to significantly reduce weeds in the home garden? Interested? Come to the Master Gardeners March 22 Open Garden Day (10am - 2pm, rain or shine) and learn more about controlling weeds in a safe and chemical free way.
At 10:30 am, a presentation on "Mulching for Weed Control" will be offered. Topics covered in the talk include: benefits of using mulch, how to use it properly, and where to obtain it - sometimes for free! Take home this month's handy Quick Tip reference cards with information on "Weeds in Landscapes" and "Weeds in Lawns".
Spring is also the time to make plans for fire safe landscaping and protection practices for your property. Questions will be answered and handouts provided on this topic at an information table throughout the day.
The Calaveras County Master Gardeners Demonstration Garden is located one-half mile off Highway 49 at the County Government Center (891 Mountain Ranch Road) in San Andreas. Gardening information is offered free of charge. When the garden is not open, home gardening assistance is offered by Master Gardeners through the Help Line: 754-2880. The public may call the number, leave a message regarding the problem, and a Master Gardener will return the call.
The Demonstration Garden is a project of the Calaveras County Master Gardeners whose primary goal is educating the public about home gardening. The garden has been under construction for several years with all funding coming from Master Gardeners, UC Cooperative Extension, grants, and private donations.
One last gardening tip: plan to attend the Master Gardeners Spring Plant Sale on April 25th (4pm-6pm) and April 26th (10am-2pm) at the Demonstration Garden. For additional details contact the UC Cooperative Extension office at 754-6477.
