Noted Photographer and Author, Tim Palmer, Will Give Special Slide Presentation and Talk "Rivers of America"

Jackson, CA...Noted photographer and author Tim Palmer will give a special slide presentation and talk, Rivers of America, at the Senior Center in Jackson on Thursday, March 27 at 7 p.m. The event, hosted by Foothill Conservancy, will be a grand tour of the rivers that have shaped our land. With incredible images and powerful words, Palmer will share his rich experiences exploring more than 300 of the nation's waterways by raft and canoe......

“If you can’t venture out to explore America’s most outstanding rivers yourself, the next best thing is to come see Tim in Jackson,” said Foothill Conservancy President Katherine Evatt. “His photos are remarkable in their beauty and his knowledge of our rivers is second to none.”

Palmer has explored and photographed America's rivers (including our own Mokelumne River) for more than 30 years. He has written 19 books about adventure travel, rivers, and the American landscape and many articles for magazines and other publications.

Palmer’s books have been awarded the National Outdoor Book Award, the Independent Publishers Award, and the Directors Award from the National Park Service. Governor Schwarzenegger ordered 20 copies of Tim's book, California Wild, to give to his cabinet members.

Many of the photos in Palmer’s Rivers of America presentation were published by Harry N. Abrams in a large-format book by the same name in 2006.

Describing that book, author David James Duncan said, “From the apex of a life given to moving water, Tim Palmer has bequeathed a gift to the generations. In these images a billion trees have gathered on America's shorelines and the very mountains have parted to honor the rivers sliding by. Sit down in the quiet, throw open your blinds, and be grateful. Here are the shining prayer wheels that sculpt and prism our continent and give it, and all of us, life.”

Palmer has worked on conservation campaigns to protect many of the country's finest streams and is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from American Rivers, the River Conservationist of the Year Award from Perception, Inc., and the Peter Behr Award from Friends of the River. Foothill Conservancy and its Vice-President Pete Bell received the same Behr award in 2001 for their work on Mokelumne River conservation.

Palmer will have copies of his books on hand to sell in Jackson, including the newest, Luminous Mountains: The Sierra Nevada of California.

Everyone is welcome to attend this special event and refreshments will be served. There is no admission charge, but Foothill Conservancy would welcome a $10 donation at the door to help defray its expenses.

For more information on the Rivers of America presentation, and Foothill Conservancy’s own efforts to secure National Wild and Scenic River designation for the Mokelumne River, contact Wild & Scenic Outreach Coordinator Debbie Dunn at (209) 296-5435 or see the Conservancy website; www.foothillconservancy.org .
