Arnold Rotary Club Offering Vocational Grants

Arnold, CA....The Arnold Rotary Club is offering two vocational grants totaling $2000.00, to be awarded on May 15, 2008. The club’s Adult Individual Initiative Grant for $1000.00, focuses on adults residing in Calaveras County who have experienced unemployment or have been employed only in entry-level jobs and are working to improve their employability skills.....

The Bob Wehe (WEE-HEE) Memorial Career Builder Grant for $1000.00 will assist an Arnold-area individual of any age and any career stage – students, business owners, employees - who is striving to enhance his or her career skills or business.

Like typical scholarships, the grants can be used for traditional education expenses, but they may also be used for other needs, based on the applicant’s particular situation. For example, a grant applicant for the Adult Individual Initiative Grant may have just started a new job, but finds a need for uniforms or work-related equipment and just can’t quite manage the finances. Winners of the Adult Individual Initiative Grant will be the applicant who best demonstrate great progress toward to improving their employability and who make the strongest case for how the grant can make a difference in their success.

To be eligible for the Bob Wehe Memorial Career-Builder Grant, applicants must either reside or be employed in the Greater Arnold Area (one of the following zip codes: 95223, 95224 or 95233). Students living outside this designated area are eligible if they maintain their official residence with family members in the area while living outside the area for the purpose of pursuing education or training.

Bob Wehe Memorial Career-Builder Grant recipients could be similar to but are not limited to the following examples: 1) An Arnold-area resident, employee, or business owner who wishes to pursue in-service education or training to build his/her career; 2) A student from the Arnold area who wishes to complement his/her current educational program by attendance at a career-related conference; 3) An Arnold-area business owner who shows how a new piece of equipment will build his/her business.

The Bob Wehe Memorial Career-Builder grant honors the memory of Rotarian Bob Wehe who believed in the promise of small business. After a long and successful career as a banker and bank founder, Wehe began a second career as a motel owner. Even in his 80’s, he remained active as owner of Wehe’s Meadowmont Lodge in Arnold. His wife Alice has assisted the club in establishing the grant in Bob’s memory.

Applications are available at all public libraries in Calaveras County, County Office of Education in Angels Camp, the Financial Aid Office at Columbia College or the Job Connection Calaveras in San Andreas until the deadline of April 18, 2008.

Completed applications must be postmarked by Saturday, April 19, 2008, or hand-delivered to the County Office of Education by Friday, April 18, 2008. Notification to the winners of the grant and all other applicants will be mailed no later than May 02, 2008.

Community members who wish to fund an Adult Individual Initiative Grant through Arnold Rotary are invited to contact Club Vocational Chair Jean Mackey at 209/754-4242. The full amount of any donation will be transferred directly to grant recipients. If they wish, the donor may participate in the selection process.
