During the week local FFA members teach and inform the community about agriculture, production and livestock. "National FFA week is seven days dedicated to educating the local community about FFA and for Bret Harte students to learn about chain and command," shared teacher Mrs. Phillips.
Each FFA chapter has different events scheduled for the week. "Every year we have new students and new committees that help put on this event. They all have something new to bring to FFA week and this year students brought new ideas for animals at our petting zoo. The new animals that we have this year include: a baby calf and a pony," shares Mrs. Phillips.
Bret Harte High School week schedule includes:
Tuesday: Faculty Luncheon
Wednesday: Petting Zoo
Thursday: Chapter Luncheon
Friday: Green House Planting
Today we visited the darling FFA petting zoo. The petting zoo was located in the large AG building at Bret Harte High School. 25 committee students set up four different locations that young kindergarteners and preschoolers could go through. Junior Holly Moore says, “Getting to teach and educate young students about agriculture is exciting. I have participated for the last two years and every year we have the privilege to add new animals to our programs so that returning students learn about new livestock."
The first location was coloring time. There, young students were able to color fresh produce, animals, and milk products. The second location was the petting zoo. The petting zoo included a baby calf, goats, goose, chicken, duck, rabbits, and a pony. "The third location is very important," said FFA member Trevor Arola. This locations purpose was to wash off any bacteria that the students may have picked up while petting the farm animals. The final and fourth location was planting and where does chocolate milk come from. At this location students were able to plan sweet pea and poppy seeds and to use cow’s milk to make one of their favorite drinks.
FFA member Courtney Spence shared, “The most exciting part about our Bret Harte FFA Petting Zoo is to see the smiles on all the children’s faces. It’s also exciting to teach the young children about animals that may seem new to them like geese and goats."
Kindergarten teacher Mrs. Arola said, "My students get to earn their trip to the Petting Zoo. Students can earn their trip by being kind and saying nice things to other people. Every time they make a nice gesture they receive a letter on my "Mystery Tree". Their goal is to spell "Petting Zoo" on the mystery tree a total of 10 nice gestures must be made for that student to participate."
All of the FFA students have been putting a lot of hard work for national FFA week. This shows that they are dedicated to something that is a big part of our community.
