What a Healthy Happy Village of Bear Valley Means Economically for our area.... It could be up to a Billion over the next 10 years~By John Hamilton

Bear Valley, CA...It seems that with everyone talking about economic development these days it might be a good time to look at some of our existing industries and destinations and run some numbers on what they contribute economically to our area. Since Bear Valley is in full swing we thought we would start with what the Bear Valley Area contributes fiscally. We started by asking around to get an estimate of what an average visitor spends per visit....

At first glance you might think the lift or trail ticket would be the largest item at say $50. It really ends up being one of the smaller expenditures. In reality Gas, Dining, Lodging, Equipment and more will make up a larger percentage of the total.

For the sake of our little discussion let's say each visitor spends $150.00. Bear Valley Mountain Resort will probably get to 150,000 skiers this year. Now if we ad Bear Valley Cross Country, Bear Valley Snowmobile, The Sno-Park visitors and more we should easily get over 200,000 visitors this year.

That means that the economic impact of Bear Valley on our area is over $30,000,000 per year. Yes that is right over $30,000,000 per year. Of that probably 1/3 third would stay at the hill but rest would be spread throughout the area.

At the hight of skiing popularity in the 1970s Bear Valley Mountain Resort pulled in well over 200,000 skiers per year all by itself. With the development and expansion plans ahead for Bear Valley Village and area 200,000 visitors per year is probably within reach again. At that rate $40,000,000 per year is probably in the not so distant future.

Some people we spoke with thought the per visitor number was closer to $250. That would push the EB or economic benefit number close to $50,000,000 already.

This figure doesn't include the construction jobs for the new condos, summer revenue, or purely sightseer visits. When asking around at a number of businesses from Murphys up to Arnold many mentioned that well over 50 percent of their revenue is from visitors to the area. So the next time you think there is too much traffic on the roads or too many people in line at the grocery store...just remember that without them most of the businesses you love to visit wouldn't even be here if they had to rely solely on local revenue.

Over the next 10 years of so as the first phases of the New Village and condos from several different developers get completed the sales from the Real Estate side alone could easily top $500,000,000. So if you look at the cash flow for our area and add normal revenue plus real estate revenue over $1,000,000,000 in impact is easily within reach.
