The Public Health Emergency Preparedness Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Agreement with the California Department of Public Health is approved retroactively from Aug. 31, 2007 to August 9, 2008.
The board approved the request during the consent agenda session of its weekly meeting Tuesday, Feb. 5 at the Government Center in San Andreas.
These funds, which include money from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, are included in this plan, which “supports planning , including for an emergency that would require the provision of vaccine or drugs to very large numbers of persons affected by a communicable disease agent," as stated in a release from the Calaveras County Health Department.
The department’s four top priorities in allocating these funds, according to the release, include:
1.Improvement of operational readiness of the County Public Health Department
2. Development of advance education and information materials related to an influenza pandemic.
3.Development of management plan for the county as part of a mass fatality management plan for the county in case of pandemic influenza outbreak. In a severe influenza outbreak, 300 or more deaths may occur in the county; funds these would help provide the county the ability to store the bodies.
4. The recruitment of local medical–health volunteers and registration in the new statewide California Medical Volunteer System.
Also during the consent agenda session, the board presented Robert Lawton, Calaveras County Administrative Officer with the $800,000 check from the Housing and Urban Development, HUD, Grant the county recently received to help needy homeowners in the area.
Several people are facing foreclosures, and many families "are having a tough time getting into home,s" said Steve Wilenksy, board chair and District 2 Supervisor.
Calaveras County applied for and received a $800,000 grant from HUD to help first-time home buyers. "This is definitely very important," Wilensky said, adding that $200,000 will go to housing rehabilitation and $600,000 will go to first-time homebuyers.
Angels Camp also received an $800,000 HUD grant to help some of the city's low-income home owners.
In other board news, Supervisors unanimously approved a professional services contract with Quad Knopf, Inc. for completion of an Environmental Impact Report, EIR, for the Ridge at Trinitas in Valley Springs; the approval also includes the authorization of a contract with applicants Mike and Michelle Nemee to reimburse the county for costs incurred from the Quad Knopf contracts, and a budget transfer of $245, 673.
Also approved unanimously was the introduction of an ordinance re-enacting a county code for establishing standards for dedications of land with possible payments for Park and Recreation Facilities.
“This is very exciting,” said Mary Boblet, Parks and Recreation District 3 Director, of the adoption of the ordinance.“We’re lawmakers.”
The board will hold its next meeting Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 9 a.m. in the Government Center in San Andreas. Call (209) 754-6370 for more information.
