***********************************************************************

On 07/04/17 the Angels Camp PD became aware of an incident that occurred at the "Pet Bath House" in Angels Camp. An owner of three dogs that were boarded there reported that he believed that his dogs were illegally killed, while they were boarded at the business. The victim related the following information.

After the Butte Fire the victim was displaced when he lost his home. He boarded his three dogs at a facility in Valley Springs, where they remained for approximately 18 months. He visited them on a regular basis and was advised recently, in mid-June, that he would have to find another facility to board them, as they were showing signs of kennel stress. They were temporarily housed with County Animal Services until they were eventually placed at the "Pet Bath House" on 06/21/17. The victim paid for the stay in advance. On 06/29/17 the victim received a telephone call from the owner of the "Pet Bath House," Hughes, who advised that the dogs got loose while in her care and became involved in a dog fight with another boarded dog. Hughes asked the victim to compensate her for the related vet bill as a result of the dog fight that occurred, which the victim did. On 07/01/17 the victim was advised that a second incident occurred, where the victim's dogs reportedly became involved in another dog fight, causing injuries to other dogs and Hughes as well. On 07/02/17 Hughes notified the victim that his three dogs were "put down," due to their aggressive behavior, and indicated to the victim that the police department was involved in the matter. It should be noted that the police department became aware of this incident on 07/04/17, when the victim reported to police that his dogs were illegally "put down."

Once the information was reported to the Angels Camp Police, an investigation began, and it was discovered that the owner of the "Pet Bath House," Hughes, provided false information to County Animal Services regarding the status of the dogs and the severity of her alleged injuries. Hughes initially reported to County Animal Services that the dogs in question had been relinquished to the care and custody of their owner, and she was deceptive in reporting the severity of the injuries she sustained while breaking up one of the dog fights.

Hughes initially advised police that the dogs had been turned loose. It was later discovered that she made arrangements for a third party to "take care" of the dogs. The third party involved has been identified, and so far is uncooperative in this investigation. To date it is unknown the status or location of the dogs, and it has not been confirmed if they are alive or dead. The investigating officer believes that the three dogs have been feloniously killed, and is attempting to gather information to confirm this.

On 07/08/17, Vonna Hughes, a 68 year old Angels Camp resident, was arrested and booked into the Calaveras County Jail on multiple charges related to animal cruelty, animal neglect, theft of an animal and conspiracy. The investigation is ongoing.

Readers, Please be kind in your comments. The innocent deserve to be able to move on with their lives once cleared. Even the guilty should be able to live and thrive here when they have paid their price.

I tried to look up the info, but found nothing of what you spoke.
I did read about her being a "Master Groomer" but from the burns my dog
received by shears that were too hot, it seems she did not teach her employees
anything from her "Master Grooming" classes. I'm wondering if that is a bogus claim of being a Master Groomer?
I do know there's a lady in Douglas Flats that's has a great reputation in grooming pets, but after the Bath House episode, I don't trust anyone anymore.

After 2 groomers refused to finish clipping my 15 year old border collie (almost 16 now) with sore hips I went to the Bath House. She has now clipped him twice and he appears totally happy when I arrive to pick him up. She never muzzled him and he is much happier being clipped. I have no complaints & will continue to go there.

Remember, innocent till proven guilty and the story seems very illogical and incomplete to me at this time.

Well I certainly hope this place is shut down in the meantime, to keep those unaware of what has happened and they don't board their pets here. She might be innocent until proven guilty, but no one else should have to suffer what the original owner has gone through.
I went through yelp to complain about what they did to my dog here so that anyone who would think about getting their dog groomed here would at least think twice about subjecting their dog to the pain mine went through.
Animals can't speak for themselves, so we have to do it for them.

So well said, and I totally agree. Our furry family members are so important to most of us and I for one would never subject my "child" to miss treatment.

These two POS need to be hung out to dry. When it comes to animal abuse, death or cruelty their is no forgiveness and the Superior Court will find them both guilty and they will be sent to the BIG BATH HOUSE!

That could explain the deaths of her husbands etc.

I've known Vonna for years. Does anybody really think that she would risk everything and do anything like this? First of all, NO DOGS WERE KILLED AT THE PET BATH HOUSE! All of this speculation and everyone talking trash about something they know nothing about. I do know that Vonna tried to assist this person because no other place would accept his three pit bulls. These dogs had been caged for way too long and were in distress. She went above and beyond her call of duty to help this person and his dogs. The dogs turned on her as well and she was attacked. They destroyed parts of her building. She tried to find a place for the dogs. Unfortunately being in the business that she's in, there have been times that people would contract with her for boarding and they would abandon their "pets" and never come and pick them up. I've witnessed this with pregnant felines to yes, put bulls. So before you convict her, know that she's devastated about this whole ordeal. She has not harmed or killed any dog. She tried to help. Look where this has gotten her. Shame on all of you haters. And for you mountain "folk", she's from the south. They have a way about them, like east coasters, midwesterners, New "Yawkers", and others. REPEAT! SHE WOULD NEVER HARM AN ANIMAL!

Have been told by others that it's an odd concept to begin with as a boarding facility - kind of an open space set up with dogs roaming freely. None of us like the idea of our pets caged but boarding is about being secure and safe. That sounds like an accident waiting to happen. Know of at least one boarded dog that escaped over the fence, crossed the highway and was visiting the parking lot at ACE and elsewhere in Angels Camp. The dog's owner came home from vacation and located his dog. That was enough for me to steer clear.

I personally have taken my dog to the Pet Bath House on numerous occasions, for boarding of anywhere from a day to a week, and several times for grooming. My dog always comes tired but happy. Yes, it is somewhat of an unconventional set-up, but our dog seems to like it better than being in a kennel. The times we've kenneled him in the past, he always seemed subdued, even depressed when he came home. I only have to imitate the ladies' strong Southern accents when telling my dog he's going to what we call "the party house" for him to get excited! Honestly!

I understand that this case is under investigation, and unless and until the parties involved are convicted, they should be given the same rights guaranteed to all of us.I truly hope this investigation finds these ladies innocent. Yes, they are sort of zany, but that is not illegal. But then again, haters gonna hate.
