Calaveras County Fair & Jumping Frog Jubilee & Fair Kickoff Dinner

Angels Camp, CA...(Frogtown, USA)...There is nothing quite like a county fair, especially when talking about the Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee. The Calaveras County Fair combines unique local events with idyllic country charm. The theme for this year’s fair, “Country Nights and Carnival Lights”, embodies the spirit of these ideals.

The photos above are from the Fair & Frog Jump Kickoff Dinner held last Thursday. In Calaveras County it is a rite of passage that if you want to be a pageant contestant...you have to kiss a few frogs. Click above for lots more photos in a larger format in our photo albums

The weekend will begin with the traditional opening day parade in downtown Angels Camp on Thursday, May 18. Additionally, Thursday is Kid’s Day. This means that children 12 and under will receive free admission as well as a free entry to jump a frog. During the day, fairgoers will be able to enjoy the carnival rides provided by the California Carnival Company in addition to the carnival games. Then in the afternoon, watch the Saddle Queen contestants compete in a variety of equestrian events to win the coveted crown. In the evening, head to the main stage to watch eight contestants compete in the Miss Calaveras Scholarship pageant. Both programs offer scholarships for the winners.

Friday marks the start of the Cowboy Stampede. During the morning, fair goers can watch the junior events like Pole Bending and the Cowboy Roundup. Then at 4 p.m., the Pony Express races will begin. But the entertainment doesn’t end there. At 8 p.m. head to the main stage for this year’s headlining entertainment, Ned LeDoux. Ned LeDoux, son of late celebrated country singer-songwriter, Chris LeDoux, has a passion for country music and has toured with acts like Toby Keith, Aaron Watson, and Randy Houser. Those in attendance will hear favorite’s like “This Cowboy’s Hat” and “We Ain’t Got It All”.

Saturday guests can spend the day walking around the fair, looking at the various wares the vendors have to offer. The Cowboy Stampede will continue on Saturday and will feature cowboys and cowgirls from the area. On this day, participates will compete in events like 3 man penning, cattle stealing, and ranch roping. But the rodeo events don’t end there. At 7:30 p.m. there will be a CCPRA Rodeo produced by the Rockin’ M Rodeo Company. This will be a full rodeo with events like team roping, bull dogging, barrels, bulls, broncs, clowns and more.

Sunday will begin with the Junior Livestock Auction. Young entrepreneurs from across the county have worked hard to provide sound livestock for the auction. The auction will begin at 8 a.m. Then at 2:30 p.m. the top 50 finalists will compete in the 2017 International Frog Jumping Championship. The winner will receive a prize of $750 and if they break the record, the champion will win $5,000. The current record is 21’ 53/4” and was set by Rosie the Ribeter in 1986. At 5:30 p.m., the 2017 Destruction Derby will begin and will last until the last car is left in the arena. Be sure to come and experience all these events at the 2017 Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee from May 18-21, 2017. Purchase advance tickets now at frogtown.org.
