"Tom’s World," An Column Exploring The Parallel Universe Of Representative McClintock ~ By David Vassar

Calaveras County, CA...“Tom’s World” is the 4th Congressional District of California stretching from Lake Tahoe in the North to Yosemite in the South, including most of the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada. It’s a reliably Red District where Donald Trump won 54% of all votes cast in 2016 and Tom won 63%. Tom won his first election in 2008 and has won four since. Tom’s World is a safe Republican seat in a state that elected Hillary Clinton by more than 4.5 million votes. I know Tom’s World rather well because unlike Tom, I actually live in the Congressional District that he represents.

During the recent Congressional Recess, more than a few Republicans returned to their home districts to hold Town Hall meetings with constituents. Those Republicans who chose to host Town Halls (many did not) were greeted by raucous and enthusiastic crowds that made it abundantly clear that there is a large segment of voters - tens of thousands of people that they represent - who take issue with the legitimacy of President Trump’s election as well as the broader Republican policies around health insurance, environmental protection, immigration, discrimination, women’s reproductive rights and cabinet appointees from the billionaire class.

Scenes of the frenzied Town Halls flooded the media with dissent and outrage over the direction the country is moving. The energy and volume of those who showed up caught most politicians flatfooted. Of all the Republicans who were lost in the headlights of popular outrage, none seemed more dumbstruck than Tom.

Tom hosted his own Town Hall in Sonora on February 23. There were 526 people inside the high school auditorium (capacity) and another 400 waiting outside. This, in a town of just 5,000. By my unofficial estimate, 30% of those inside were Trump supporters. The rest were local ‘progressives’ who seem to have recently woken up to the fact Donald Trump is dead serious about implementing policies that many in attendance considered unthinkable.

As he answered questions from the crowd, he provided his own guided tour of the lunaticfringe that is Tom’s World. On defunding Planned Parenthood he stated, “They pressure women into having abortions.” On global warming, “Sure, the planet is warming, as it has for the last 3 billion years, but there is no scientific evidence that it’s human caused.” On Russia meddling in the election, “I won’t support a Congressional investigation because I don’t want to delegitimize Donald Trump.” On selling off public lands for mining, drilling and logging, “The long overdue disposal of excess federal lands will free up resources for the federal government while providing much-needed opportunities for economic development in struggling rural communities.”

On and on it went, issue after issue for nearly three hours. 536 people who had never been to Tom’s World got the chance to shine a spotlight into its darkest corners. And although there were thundering objections that shook the room, Tom also delivered long, monotone passages where listeners simply looked at one another and shook their heads in disbelief. It was the first time they had entered Tom’s World and they could not believe their ears.

They didn’t realize that in addition to being a fervent Trump supporter, Tom is also a Tea Party darling. He’s a founding member of the so-called ‘Freedom Caucus.’ Tom was a leader of the shutdown that closed the Federal Government in 2013. That was the same year that the catastrophic Rim Fire burned more than 250,000 acres in Tom’s District. The fire forced a month-long road closure that nearly bankrupted the 'gateway' businesses that rely upon Yosemite for their livelihood. In September,
Tom’s Government Shutdown closed Yosemite National Park for an additional two weeks. Only in Tom’s World is it okay to engineer a shutdown that inflicts extreme financial pain on his already suffering constituency.

I’m guessing that progressives aren’t the only voters in Tom’s World who have never seen what’s really there. Given that his District is more than 60% Republican, voters clearly don’t understand the (R) after Tom McClintock, doesn’t stand for Reasonable.

Hopefully, progressives and moderate Republicans alike will begin to see Tom’s World for what it really is; an unhinged parallel universe where there is no room for reason, science or critical thinking.

A world where only Tom can be happy.

A dystopian world run amok that hopefully, in November of 2018, will be reduced to a population of one.

It's this sort of vitriol that got you Trump in the first place.

Constantly bashing your opponents to the point that you can't engage in dialog is how we got here. This virtue signaling by Mr. Vassar to his liberal cohorts is fine, but after reading his article (rant?) I can see he is not really open to discussing these issues.

Government shutdown in 2013... The national park service spent extra money on keeping people out of OUR parks, and went as far as to cone off section of highway outside of Mount Rushmore to stop people from looking. I am all for getting rid of a vindictive government.

Global warming? The science is settled? Even the IPCC keeps changing their model - and more worrisome, also the data. You thing big oil has money? Nothing compared to big government.

I whole heartedly want to have a reasonable discussion about the government and the country's direction... but it seems that Mr. Vassar, along with his cohorts, are projecting onto the rest of us when they claim we are unhinged parallel universe where there is no room for reason, science or critical thinking.

And that is how you got Trump.

Mr. Vassar needs reassuring that his medications will continue to be available. It certainly is an ugly place if you live in "Dave's World". This rant is so off the mark that medication won't help. Also, the "Tea Party" grew out of reaction to out of control government and lack of representation by our elected people. These protests and BS at the town halls is orchestrated and sometimes paid for by the alt left and glorified by CNN and other fake news outlets. WTG Trump!!!

Very good and true post. It has been obvious to see how the liberals and democrats have acted since losing the elections with all of the riots and violence. It's like all of the criminals have come out of the wood work. I'd rather see all of the violent democrats and liberals be run out of the country then the illegals from south of the boarder. At least the illegals want to work and make a living and enjoy the good life in the land of the free, instead of crying whining, and destroying others property.

Uh, no...Obamacare was the step backwards...all it did was rob from the rich to pay for the poor. It did nothing to control premiums or health care costs. Even those on Covered CA this year got at least a 13% increase over the prior year. If you ask anyone on Covered CA if they like the plan over what they had before, don't be shocked if they tell you that many doctors and specialists are not taking those plans...they'll take the regular Anthem plan, but the Anthem plan under Covered CA pays doctors a lot less, so they've chosen not to take those plans. Remember all those promises about keeping your old health plan and your same doctors? Broken...just like the health care system as a whole.

Honestly, it doesn't matter what you do here in CA...Clinton lost because she insulted and downplayed those in "flyover country". Not all Republicans are happy that Trump was the ultimate front-runner, but Clinton dug her own grave by unifying the Republican vote against her.

Have you ever attended a Tom McClintock meeting, fund raiser, town hall? Even watched one on YouTube? If not, then you should not be name calling. There have been many supporters in these audiences that are questioning what is happening in Washington.

Sadly, Tom is not making #AlternativeFact claims related to the ACA. He will be getting an email from me on the topic, asking that he publicly admit the lie and correct his statement.

I've been watching him since the 2016 election campaign began. I keep track of his voting record. What this article has said is all true. Tom is walking the far right line and this is not what his constituents want. If he keeps it up, he'll be ousted in 2018.

Good for you Mr. Vasser for standing up for those of us who aren't willing to sit quietly while Trump and his Cronies ruin America. Talk about Draining the Swamp - they are the Swamp.

This isn't about Hillary or Obama. It's about our Children and our Children's children. This is about the Trump machine destroying much that we as American's hold sacred.

So don't think for one second that we're willing to stand by and do nothing while our Country raped and the values we've worked so hard to protect are pissed away. I for one won't sit by watch it happen. I'm no "snowflake" and I will fight to protect the things important to me and my family.

Glad you have the balls to stand up for what is right. Many of us agree and are right there with you.

Trump was better then electing the most corrupt politician in America. Why don't you try to open your eyes. The Clinton Foundation closing is a perfect example. The doors closed after she lost the elections, do you know why? Those millions and millions of dollars from foreign billionaires stopped, the foundations contributions ceased the day she lost, because the foreigners could not collect their "favors" from their contributions. You are the reason we have the Electoral College System in place, because of ignorant, uneducated voter such as yourself.
Have a great 4 to 8 years of an honest President, a honest Commander In Chief in place, then a dishonest, unethical liar as in Hillary selling out our country, America.

Most republicans do live in their own world or "bubble." They watch Fox News, read and believe BS internet news. They don't work or even affiliate with a typical diverse modern America. It's God, Country and guns and not always in that order. If you can find a highly educated, well traveled individual, you can bet that 99% of them are not conservative. Why is that?

I'm a registered Republican and I attended the Sonora town hall meeting with McClintock. I couldn't believe what the hell he was saying. I'm serious! He was like some sort of wind up automaton up there.

I would've NEVER EVER voted for Trump if I'd been given half a chance to know and consider all that Russia crap. My God, people, Putin isn't our friend! What the hell is McClintock thinking?!

Thank you for your article, Mr. Vassar. I want sensible immigration control and better job security in my country. I want energy exploration and a balanced budget. I don't give a damn who uses what bathroom. But we don't need Russia's help to solve any of that. And it makes me sick to know I voted for a liar and fraud. Damn his ass, anyway. I'm too embarrassed to watch the news anymore.

I feel like I am in an alternate universe, the one where I actually regret casting my vote. In 30 years, I've never had that happen.

We REAL conservatives and REAL Christians have to do something about Trump. I'm just so heartsick and demoralized that I don't know where to start.

I'm going to start right here, by admitting I was wrong to vote for Trump.

Happy to hear you say that. Many Republicans now feel duped into voting for Trump. I think many so wanted change that they were willing to roll the dice and hope for a good outcome.

I'm all for "Draining the Swamp" on both sides of the Isle. If it's actually determined that the Democrats have done the things they're accused of, then drain that swamp. Same for the Republicans. How is that the the new Secretary of Education has no real experience other than her family donating $200,000,000 to the Republicans and ultimately the Trump campaign? I'd say the same if it had been Clinton.

What I'm seeing so far is a circus in the Whitehouse. I'm ashamed that we're the laughing stock of the world right now.

If the News Media doesn't drink the orange cool-aid, it's Fake Media? I grew up respecting Dan Rather and I would say there is nothing fake about him. ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN? And if Politifacts is Fake Media, then why did they win a Pulitzer Prize. The Pulitzer Freakin Prize? So far seems Trump is the one with a long history of making up facts and statistics to suit his needs. Many of which can be debunked immediately with a simple Google search. Or is Google all fake media too?

I love this Country but the appointment of Trumps Cronies who clearly are in the pockets of Big Business scares me.

While some might call us "snowflakes" and "libtards" many of us just want what all true Americans want. A better place for our Children and their Children. From what I see we're going in the opposite direction.

I'm ashamed that many people I call friends relish watching "yet another whining libtard gets pepper-sprayed". Check out some of the pro Trump videos on YouTube. Is that was we want to teach our Children? Is this the America we really want?

he lie abou Planne Panenhood forcing women ito abortions. The fact is they provide alot of free screening services for poor women. He tauted the party line about climate but here in San Andreas there is nothing normal about the extreme remperatures last year that killed off 10 of my old growth trees. BW SSI is not an entitlement, it's tax money I put in for the last 50+ years for mu retirement -- it belongs to the people who participated, paid the employment tax and if the government stopped stealing from it's coffers for wars there would be no worry about future recipients.

Well stated. I was one of those stuck outside so I watched the 3 tapes on YouTube. Then I watched the Mariposa Town Hall and Tom's position was pretty consistent.

I'm delighted to see Trump supports standing up against what is happening in Washington and thus the country. I'm proud the media is not buckling under as Trump heightens his threats.

If anyone watched the recent George Bush interview, he did a wonderful job of making his point about Trump actions without being offensive. Basically, Bush doesn't like what he's seeing.

Please stand up for us come 2018. Get these far right autocrats out of office. America was great. America is rapidly going downhill under Trump. American can remain great if we get true support for our values in DC.
