Alpine County Heritage Tourism Rededicate Historic Sites
Markleeville, CA...A day of historic recognition and rededication is set for Saturday, April 9, 2016 for three Markleeville main street locations. The rededication ceremonies will begin at noon across from the courthouse in Markleeville. The first is the Charles W. Barrett Memorial Fountain, originally erected in 1941, to honor the former sheriff of Alpine County. Next is the Markleeville Heritage Park and Nature Area, located adjacent to the Alpine County Courthouse. This is the former location of the United States Forest Service guard station.
Coordinated by the Alpine Watershed Group and community volunteers, this area will see restoration of the Creek Flood Plain and a new interpretive nature site. At 1PM, the Snowshoe Thompson Chapter of “E Clampus Vitus” will be dedicating a plaque at the park site honoring Jacob Markley. Finally, the historic Markleeville Cemetery (as a self-guided tour) has been recut and marked with a new “Cemetery Trail” sign. The cemetery which was in use as early as the 1860s has seen a considerable amount of restoration work completed thanks to the efforts of the Alpine County Historical Society and Museum and the Alpine Trails Association.
The restoration efforts could not have been completed without the support of the County of Alpine, Alpine County Chamber of Commerce, the Alpine County Heritage Tourism Committee, the Alpine County Historical Society and Museum, Alpine Watershed Group, private donations and County staff and volunteers.
