Volunteers Needed to Help with Calaveras County Homeless Census
Calaveras County, CA...Communities seeking federal funding for housing needs are required to conduct a Point-in-Time census of their homeless population every two years. In Calaveras County the Homeless count will take place on Wednesday, January 28, 2015. ...
Volunteers are needed to conduct surveys at various locations where homeless people may be found and at places that provide services such as food pantries, churches, community centers, government agencies and nonprofit organizations. Training for volunteer “Enumerators” will be provided on Thursday, January 22 from 1-3 PM in the Sequoia Room of Calaveras Works and Human Services, 509 E. St. Charles Street in San Andreas.
Volunteers involved in street outreach will be visiting assigned locations during the afternoon or evening hours on January 28, or morning of January 29. Volunteers working at service locations may conduct surveys for a seven day period beginning January 28, for those who are without a permanent, primary night time residence on the night of January 28, 2015.
The homeless count is conducted according to guidelines established by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), by the Central Sierra Continuum of Care, a coalition of government agencies and nonprofit organizations concerned with finding solutions to the problem of homelessness in Amador, Calaveras, Tuolumne and Mariposa Counties.
Participation in the survey is entirely voluntary and no identification is requested or recorded. Information gathered from the survey will be used to seek funding for services and facilities for homeless people.
People interested in volunteering, or wanting more information, are asked to call Jerry Cadotte at Sierra HOPE in Angels Camp, 209-736-6792 or Bonnie Garcia at the Resource Connection Food Bank in San Andreas, 209-754-1257.
