Caltrans Breaks Ground on Port of Stockton Freeway Extension
Stockton, CA ...Caltrans and the San Joaquin Council of Governments (SJCOG) broke ground today on a freeway extension near the Port of Stockton that will divert truck traffic from the residential Boggs Tract community and improve goods movement. “This project will help remove trucks from a residential neighborhood, improving quality of life for residents while giving trucks and motorists a faster, less-stressful alternative,” said Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty. The Crosstown Freeway (State Route 4) Extension Project will construct a new four-lane elevated roadway extending the freeway from Fresno Avenue to Navy Drive. Currently, the freeway ends at Fresno Avenue, creating congestion on local streets. About 6,500 vehicles a day (including 4,400 heavy trucks a day) travel through Boggs Tract. When the extension project is completed, vehicles will no longer exit at Fresno Avenue and onto residential streets....
The project will improve the connection between Interstate 5, the Crosstown Freeway and the economically vital Port of Stockton, which moves more than $1 billion in products each year. With an expansion of the port planned in the next decade, substantially more truck trips are projected. The $140 million project is funded by $70 million from local Measure K and $70 million from Proposition 1B, a 2006 voter-approved transportation bond. To date, more than $17 billion in Proposition 1B funds have been put to work statewide for transportation purposes. “This is another example of a continuing partnership between Measure K and Caltrans to improve the movement of goods and services in the San Joaquin region,” said SJCOG Executive Director Andrew Chesley. Caltrans and SJCOG, along with the city of Stockton and San Joaquin County, worked together to secure funding and move this project forward.
