Judge Douglas Mewhinney Chosen Murphys Irsh Day Parade Grand Marshal
Murphys, CA....The Hon. Douglas V. Mewhinney, who recently retired as the Presiding Judge of the Calaveras County Superior Court, will be the Grand Marshall when the Murphys Irish Day Parade makes its way down Main Street on Saturday, March 15, starting at 11 a.m. “We feel the Grand Marshall should be someone who has played an important role in making our area the wonderful place that it is,” states Carrie Nelson, who with her husband Gerry oversees the parade. “Judge Mewhinney certainly meets that criteria.” Mewhinney has served the county in a number of roles since 1977 when he was chosen to be the Deputy District Attorney. He later became District Attorney and then transferred to the other side of the bench as a Justice Court Judge. He has been a Superior Court judge since 1998....

"The Murphys Irish Day parade exemplifies the rich local traditions that make Calaveras County such a wonderful place to live and work and are such a part of its diverse culture," says Mewhinney. “I am honored to be its Grand Marshal.”
Riding in the parade with the judge will be his wife of 40 years Cathi.
The parade will kick off to the stirring sounds of the White Hackle Pipe Band.
“We have a number of our traditional crowd favorites returning, and several new participants,” states Nelson. “The first-timers include the High Country Derby Girls, the Sons of the American Revolution, the Calaveras Belles, the Murphys Historic Preservation Society and the Lavender Ridge Musicians.”
The Cub Scouts, as is tradition, will be the color guard and lead the parade. Members of the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and preschoolers will be among the other groups representing the young people of the area. There will be equestrian units including the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Posse and the Peppermint Creek Carriage. Among the other animals taking part will be the canine members of the Sierra West Bernese Mountain Dog Club.
Local organizations participating will include the Native Sons of the Golden West with their giant California flag, and Soroptimist International of Calaveras County.
Other entries will include the trumpet playing Dr. Jay Grimstead, Ironstone Vineyards, the Sheriff’s Department and the Murphys Fire District. There will also be a leprechaun, or two, including Rusty O'Flattery who is ten feet tall, an unusual height for a leprechaun.
Announcers Dave Bowman and Jim Bailey will be stationed along the parade route to describe each entry as it passes.
Murphys Irish Day is presented each year by the Murphys Business Association with proceeds funding the activities of the association as well as community projects and enhancements. For more information go to www.visitmurphys.com.
