BEAR VALLEY TO HOST THE FIRST ANNUAL FREEHEEL FESTIVAL – March 28-30, 2014
Bear Valley, CA – February 27, 2014– Our snow dances worked and it is game on for the Freeheel Festival! A celebration of telemark, randonee, alpine touring, backcountry and splitboard riders, the new Freeheel Festival takes the best of the Bear Valley Telemark Festival and welcomes everyone who earns their turns. “Everything you loved about the Telemark Festival plus more enthusiasts and more styles,” says owner Aaron Johnson. Three days of educational clinics, all terrain adventure race, backcountry tours, and banquets. The festival begins on Friday, March 28th at Bear Valley Mountain and continues through Sunday March 30th. Folks can attend the whole weekend package for $235 or register for events a la carte starting at $50. Each day offers instruction from the most talented pool of professional ski instructors assembled in the West including Alison Gannett of the Rippin’ Chix Steeps Camps and Save our Snow Foundation...
The all-terrain Adventure Race happens on
Saturday for those determined to raise their heart rate and eyebrows! The Grizzly Classic offers
two divisions: race and heavy metal for those not in specialized gear. The course includes
uphill skinning, downhill, boot pack and a skate track to satisfy novice and serious USSMA
racers. “Backcountry travel incorporates so many disciplines and this Festival provides great
exposure to all the elements and fun practice time,” says owner Kimi Johnson. Saturday and
Sunday clinic topics include telemark, splitboard and alpine techniques, avalanche awareness
including beacon searches, pit digging and forecast interpretation, backcountry route finding,
skinning and soft boundary etiquette. Sunday includes backcountry ski tours plus more clinics at
the ski resort.
Friday night includes an All You Can Eat Buffet in town with the infamous Open Mic Night for
jamming, joking and jousting. The Saturday night Banquet includes prizes for the racers, brews,
Alison Gannett’s Global Cooling Ski Adventure Show, locally and organically grown dinner, live
music and jovial camaraderie which may involve limbo for those with quads that keep on ticking.
