Independent Mercantile Expands With Second Location ND&X on Main Street!
Murphys, CA...On the eastern end of Murphys’ Main Street—the pedestrian-friendly eating, shopping and wine tasting epicenter of the Highway 4 corridor—sits not one, but two equally unique retail spaces owned by friends, artisans and proprietors Jill Compton and Linda Trent. Independent Mercantile, located at 78 Scott Street, has been proffering aesthetically-charged wares from its' inviting teal storefront since the fall of 2010. This fall, on the third anniversary of the first store opening, the gals opened their second store. ND&X ( pronounced “Indy Annex”) is located around the corner at 281 Main Street...
Independent Mercantile will continue to offer a thoughtfully curated assortment of merchandise that adheres to their "Cool Things for Humans" premise. Product lines include: natural handcrafted body products, Linda Trent jewelry, art, fabric, women's clothing, candles, bags, tasteful useful essentials and an expansive just-for-kids section.
ND&X has a more grown up focus without being too "grown up" and certainly not boring. The offering features home goods and entertaining, including select furniture pieces, lighting, small batch hand-made cocktail tonics and bitters, body products for men and women, luxurious blankets & throws, games, glassware, soapstone cookware, and an assortment of unique items that appeal to men including handmade replica's of historic baseballs, fishing lures and gadgetry. Linda Trent will be onsite handcrafting jewelry from both locations through the holiday season.
Linda and Jill are thrilled to be together again as partners in this creative business venture and are committed to stocking their shops with useful well-made, well-designed affordable goods for their customers to enjoy for years to come. They want their shops to be the ones locals come to first when they need something and also the one tourists talk about and remember fondly when they leave.
The two, who grew up in Ohio and Kentucky, met in the Design Program at the University of Cincinnati where they worked side by side on design projects and in retail settings throughout their college career. Chance, Fate, and perhaps a little luck, led Linda across the country to California to pursue athletic dreams and eventually, Bear Valley where she met her husband. Jill pursued her path in design which led to NYC where she worked in the field for many years. A visit to the area in 1996 changed all that and she and her husband relocated to Bear Valley in 1997. Both Linda and Jill are happy to be raising their respective families betwixt Calaveras and Alpine counties, along with growing their businesses in an area they love.
Please join them in both brick-and-mortar locations during the Murphys Open House event Friday, December 6 from 5 pm to 8 pm. Libations and hors d’oeuvres will be served. Hope to see you there!
