Supervisor Callaway to Run for Re-Election
Calaveras County, Nov. 25, 2013 – District 3 Supervisor and Chair of the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors, Merita Callaway, recently announced she will run for re-election in District 3 which encompasses eastern Calaveras County from the Calaveras County/Alpine County line to Douglas Flat and a portion of Vallecito. Surrounding communities include Murphys, Brice Station, Hathaway Pines, Avery, Arnold, White Pines, Dorrington, Camp Connell, Sherman Acres, Sky High and Tamarack. With the advent of redistricting, the area of Murphys, Douglas Flat and Vallecito will be voting in District 3 for the first time June 3, 2014...
Callaway is committed to continue her work with the residents on their individual issues and concerns, such as land use, code enforcement, housing, roads and business opportunities. “A good portion of my work is dedicated to individual constituent problems and interfacing with local or state agencies on their behalf,” she explained. To that end Callaway keeps regular office hours from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fridays at the Arnold Library and recently added office hours from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays at the Murphys Firehouse.
For years Callaway has devoted her ongoing efforts to represent District 3 on the Board of Supervisors, thoroughly researching each issue and making decisions to better the lives of its residents. “I have spent the last year on broadband expansion,” she recalled. “Economic prosperity is dependent on its infrastructure. I had a business tell me that most of their communication and billing to their customers is through the internet, ‘We cannot be without it.’”
Other projects in development are the Pine Drive /Oak Circle paved path that will connect to the Arnold Rim Trail; the completion of the County’s General Plan which will include the Arnold, Avery-Hathaway Pines, Ebbetts Pass and Murphys-Douglas Flat community plans; completion of the environmental impact for the new animal shelter; increase of commercial recycle; and developing a funding mechanism for a walking path in Arnold and in Murphys Park.
“I will continue to promote the quality of life issues, transparent government, safe and clean neighborhoods, and a healthy business community where we can live, shop and play,” Callaway confirmed. “This covers everything from fire safety to removing junk cars. It is critical to do everything we can to keep District 3 the best place to live.”
Callaway has consistently been a grassroots supervisor. She is involved in a wide range of community activities and organizations and can be seen at many events. “It is a challenging time and we must not be lulled into complacency,” advised Callaway. “We are a District where people work together and embrace innovation. It is a wonderful place to live, do business, recreate, have our kids attend our schools, and support each other. I want to continue serving the people of District 3.”
