Stanislaus Employee Receives a Regional and National Award
Sonora, Calif., (November 15, 2013) Marie Malo, a natural resource interpretive specialist on the Stanislaus National Forest, recently received the Forest Service 2013 Pacific Southwest Region Gifford Pinchot Award and the National Gifford Pinchot Award for her “Excellence in Interpretation and Conservation Education.”
This past year, Malo orchestrated the Pinecrest Fish Faire, created Saturday Morning Interpretive Snowshoe hikes, established the first “Artist in Residence” program, hosted a career day presentation to over 120 4th-6th grade students and trained new interpreters to increase Forest Service presence.
“Marie has demonstrated exemplary leadership skills in applying interpretive and educational activities for visitors of all ages,” said Regional Forester Randy Moore.
Additionally, the number of visitors participating in summer interpretive programs under Malo’s leadership, doubled in two years, from 8,000 to 16,000.
“She has been personally responsible for dramatically increasing the forest’s contacts with visitors promoting a positive feeling about national forests and encouraging the public to develop a sense of stewardship for the Stanislaus National Forest’s natural resources,” said Forest Supervisor Susan Skalski.
“I’m deeply honored and greatly humbled having received the national award with Gifford Pinchot’s name. It has been my good fortune to use the beauty of the Stanislaus National Forest as an inspirational classroom,” said Malo, the forest’s interpretive specialist for the past two years.
