Daniel Brian Darby 1934 - 2013

Angels Camp, CA...Daniel Brian Darby passed away November 9, 2013 in Angels Camp, California, with his family at his side. He is survived by his wife of 56+ years, Eleanor, and their four children, Daniel 'Brian' Darby Jr. (Jeannae), Denise Volpetti (Dave), Mike Darby (Linda) and Rob Darby (Veronica), eight grandsons, Kyle Robinson and Andrew Volpetti of Oakhurst, Evan Robinson (Tiffany) of Clovis, Sean Darby (Kelly), Josiah and Joseph Darby of Angels Camp, and Rasmus and Lucas Darby of Sweden. One great-granddaughter, Mystery Darby of Angels Camp. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and many other extended family, most of whom still reside in Calaveras County....

Dan was born to Jay Anson 'Chub' and Florence Darby on May 16, 1934 in his parents' home in Murphys, California. He was the youngest of seven children. He remained a resident of Calaveras County his entire life, except during the time he served in the US Navy as a cook on the LST #975. He married his wife Eleanor Schena in June 1957 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Angels Camp. They purchased a home in Angels Camp, where they raised their four children and have remained in the same house since. After the Navy, Dan worked at the Calaveras Cement Plant in San Andreas and later retired from PG&E, after 30 years, as a Water Systems Repairman.

After retiring from PG&E, Dan and Eleanor travelled to Italy, France, Switzerland and Sweden visiting with relatives. They also enjoyed attending his annual Navy reunion, and by doing so, visited many states around the country. One trip took them to visit friends in Montreal and other Canadian provinces. The community, friends and family will remember Dan driving around town, often stopping at one of his favorite spots to share a coffee, friendship and a laugh with his many friends. He was a volunteer to many in the community, for example, cooking his famous Navy beans for groups such as the Italian Catholic Federation, the Angels Gun Club, Native Sons and all the family events. He was also a member of the Mother Lode A's and the Italian Catholic Friends RV Club. But most of all he will be remembered for his dry sense of humor.

A service will be held for Dan at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Angels Camp on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at 11:00 AM, followed by a reception at the Native Sons Hall in Murphys. There will be a private burial at a later date.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to all the family and friends for their support during his final days.

Dad, you were like a great loaf of bread, crusty on the outside and very soft on the inside!

We love you, Dad! We'll see you again one day.
