Sarah Lunsford Book Signing Oct. 18 At Hovey Winery Tasting Room

Murphys – Sarah Lunsford, author of the recently-released “Wineries of the Gold Country” and the newest edition of Acadia Publishing’s Images of America series, will hold a book signing from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18 at Hovey Winery Tasting Room, 350 A Main St., Murphys. The book boasts more than 200 vintage images of vineyards and winemaking in the Sierra Foothills...

Highlights of “Wineries of the Gold Country” include rarely seen before images gathered from public and private collections from five counties – Nevada, Placer, El Dorado, Amador, Calaveras and Tuolumne. Lunsford also shares the stories of these wineries, many of which are still family owned and operated with deep roots in cultivating vineyards and producing wine in the region. She discusses how French and Italian immigrants brought their winemaking techniques with them during the Gold Rush, making the area a top producing wine region in the late 1800s.

“I hope that this book broadens people’s view of the Gold Country and the men and women who lived in the area during the Gold Rush, along with those who live in the area today,” said Lunsford. “Although the area’s history is undeniably tied to the gold that brought in immigrants from around the world, another story is told in the soil where vineyards and winemaking held great promise. This promise was only truly realized when the Wine Renaissance of the 1970s took hold, and has since grown into the award-winning wine producing region of today.”

A graduate of the University of California Berkeley with a turn at the historic Pembroke College at Cambridge University, England, have given Lunsford an appreciation of history and the people who make it. She is a feature writer for Sierra Lodestar and is a tenured area personality with Calaveras Peg Access TV.

“Wineries of the Gold Country” is available at Hovey Tasting Room for $21.99, as well as through arcadiapublishing.com. For more information about the book signing, call Jan Hovey at 728-9700.
