Calaveras Bonsai Club Demonstration Invitation
Angels Camp, CA...If you are interested in or curious about bonsai trees, come to the Calaveras Bonsai Club’s next monthly meeting on Oct. 5 at 10:00 am in Utica Park, located on Highway 49/Main Street in Angels Camp. As part of the meeting, a free demonstration on shohin bonsai will be presented by Dan Balsley, club president. Members will also be available to provide guests with information on this form of living art....
Bonsai is the Japanese word for “tree on a tray.” Shohin literally means “a tiny thing” and refers to miniature bonsai trees that stand between 4” to 10” in height. They appear as full-size trees but grown on a very small scale and can be held comfortably in one hand.
While the techniques and aesthetic considerations are the same for all bonsai, the focus of shohin design is primarily on the seasons. Due to limited space, they require simplicity, suggestion and precision, which can affect the harmony and naturalness of its growth arrangement. Age and sheer power are less emphasized with shohin than with larger bonsai.
Membership in the Calaveras Bonsai Club is open to everyone and not limited to residents of Calaveras County. For more information, contact Dan Balsley at (209) 603-1823.
