Air Traffic over Calaveras County? Just Rm Fire Air Supprt Heading Home
San Andreas, CA...We have had some inbound questions on if there has been an incident in Calaveras County with the helicopters and low flying aircraft. We just checked in with the TCU Command center to confirm that it was just Rim Fire planes and helos heading back to McClellan. The DC-10s, C-130s and the Blackhawk National Guard Helos are working from there. During the day the helicopters usually work from local retardant mixing facilities and refueling stations and only return home at night.
Things have luckily been fairly quiet for the folks at TCU Command during the Rim Fire. Normally all of the fire response and incident commands during fire season here locally run through San Andreas but the Rim Fire is under Federal Incident Commanders so Cal-Fire's normal roll as lead agency has but moved to shared command.
