Murder Mystery Dinner at The Big Trees Hotel

Calaveras Big Trees State Park – Calaveras Big Trees Association (CBTA) is hosting a Murder Mystery Dinner on September 21, 2013, the major fundraising event this year to help support high quality educational and interpretive programs at Calaveras Big Trees State Park. “Murder at the Big Trees Hotel” is set in the late 1800’s and will feature John Muir as one of the guests as well as Augustus Dowd, the discoverer of the Big Trees! Dinner guests are encouraged to dress in the fashions of the 1860-70’s...

We hope to transport everyone back in time to enjoy live music, delicious food and to help solve a “Murder at the Big Trees Hotel.”
Dinner and entertainment will be held in historic Jack Knight Hall, the stone and timber lodge built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s.

All proceeds from the dinner and raffle go to support educational programs at he state park. Currently CBTA is supporting seasonal interpretive staff, park interns, construction of the new visitor’s center and exhibit hall, and a new video program that will be shown to visitors when they first arrive at the park. The dinner and evening events are staffed by volunteers who support the park.

For more information about the Murder Mystery Dinner go to our website at www.bigtrees.org. You can purchase individual tickets for $50 or an entire table at a discount. Reservations are filling up fast.

CBTA has support from numerous area businesses in the form of raffle prizes and financial support, and part of the pre-dinner program encourages dinner participants to get out into the local communities and visit those supporters. To help with this, we have set up a ‘points game’ with awards to encourage Murder Mystery Dinner guests to visit supporting community businesses between September 1st and the 21st. Points sponsors are located in Angels Camp, Arnold, Douglas Flat, Murphys and San Andreas. A list of supporting businesses is at the bottom of this article.

The pre-dinner point game starts with each dinner guest downloading a points sheet from the Internet listing each of our sponsors with name, address, business hours and type of business. Guest then visit as many locations as they wish during the month and get verification that they were there. Our hope is that guests will discover businesses that are new to them and, perhaps, find something they can’t resist. Participants will be rewarded with a small token of our appreciation for visiting our sponsors and they will also receive one raffle ticket for each sponsor they visit. Raffle prizes are gifts donated by our local sponsors and the drawing will occur at the dinner. The more sponsors you visit, the better your chances to win.

Business sponsors only need to sign-off or stamp the sheet when the guest presents it to them.

CBTA IS very grateful for all our sponsors. Besides the ‘points sponsors’ we have sponsors who have generously donated to our dinner, sponsors who have provided gifts for our raffle and others who have underwritten additional funds for the event. It would be very difficult for CBTA to provide park programs and special events without the support of our community.

This sponsorship level costs only $40. If you are a business person who wants to participate in the points game, call Mara Naber at 209-754-0521 to get more information. You can still donate and be listed in our program even if you are not able to accommodate foot traffic at your place of business.
