CCWD Temporarily Supplies Blue Lake Springs Water to Avoid Serious Shortage

Arnold, CA...Commencing today, the residents of Blue Lake Springs will begin getting water from CCWD on an emergency basis. At the request of the State Department of Public Health, the interconnection with CCWD will be opened to provide CCWD water in the system. Blue Lake Springs operates a ground water system from a couple wells which frequently run low during peak summer demands. There has been an on-going problem with Blue Lake Springs being able to draw enough water to meet its needs. The State has directed Blue Lake Springs to consider alternatives and that study is still pending...

Blue Lake Springs has attempted to drill new wells but the nature of fractured bedrock wells has a dubious history in the Sierra Community. For many years, CCWD has sold additional water to meet peak demands for Blue Lake Springs, but this was considered an unfair burden on the rate payers for CCWD and ultimately the capacity for this water will be assigned to other CCWD customers as more and more are connected. So this connection could not be considered a reliable secondary supply for Blue Lake Springs until they actually acquired that capacity from CCWD.

Given the current limited production capability combined with high demand and high fire danger; Blue Lake Springs will use CCWD water to meet its demand and allow their wells to rest and perhaps recover. Using all CCWD water also minimizes the potential for any undesirable conditions when surface water and ground water sources are combined in the distribution system. During this time Blue Lake Springs customers will enjoy the softer water and great tasting water from CCWD’s New Spicer Reservoir.
