Summer in Calaveras means Concerts in the Parks - CVB Feature

Angels Camp, CA...The first day of summer starts a week earlier in Calaveras County if you mark your calendar by the Calaveras Arts Council’s free summer concert series: Music in the Parks. This year’s line-up marks the 22nd year of Music in the Parks from Copperopolis to Arnold and Valley Springs to Rail Road Flat. Residents and visitors alike pack up their favorite picnic treats, pull together their lawn chairs and blankets, and set out for ten weeks of great music, family friendly environments, and kick back to savor the experience...

The nonprofit Calaveras Arts Council’s mission is to support, awaken, and nourish the arts in the community. To help raise funds for these free concerts, arts council volunteers dance throughout the parks with funny hats and colorful buckets welcoming audience donations. The donations help pay for the bands, the hospitality, and for the all round good time.

Nine of the ten Music in the Parks (MIP) performers hail from Northern California, many of them local enough to be considered friends and neighbors, playing terrific music and proving that Calaveras County inspires great art. Non Californians hail from Texas, bringing us true cowboy tunes and chatter.

Mokelumne CrossingThis summer’s musical road trip starts June 12 in Copperopolis Town Square with Mokelumne Crossing – a folk Americana band with a foothill twist.

On June 19 Rupert Duncan Country Band comes to Angels Camp in Utica Park, singing some good ol’ country western.

To change the tunes a bit, B-Side, a sound of the 60’s performs in Mountain Ranch at the Community Park on June 26. You will want to bring your dancin’ shoes for this one.

Murphys musician Grover Anderson appears on July 3 at Turner Park in San Andreas where his original folk and rock folk will fill the air.

The blues come to Valley Springs Ball Field on July 10 with James Faifua & the Jukes who will entice picnickers to feel the groove.

Rounding out old rock ‘n roll, Route 88 will entertain us all with the sounds we grew up on. They will be at Mokelumne Hill’s Shutter Tree Park on July 17.

Rupert Duncan Country BandMurphys Community Park welcomes Bill Welles and his Folk America tunes on July 24. Bill is a local who has taught many new musicians how to create and play great music.

Cantamous presents their acoustic blend of folk, jazz, blues and Latin on CAMPS Restaurant at Greenhorn Creek grounds on July 31.

Small town, Rail Road Flat Elementary School enjoys the sounds of rock, reggae and a little funk from Dyemusica on August 7.

Cowboy minstrels Pip and Gill Gillette will entertain the audience with cowboy songs, stories, and guitar strumming. As summer comes early to Calaveras County, it comes to a close early as well. The Gillette Brothers help us say adieu to summer on August 14 at Cedar Center in Arnold.
