La Contenta Men’s Club Tournament Results

Valley Springs, CA... Sat- Sun April 13th and 14th - The La Contenta Men’s Club had a full plate of options last weekend. The Club hosted a two day NCGA Four Ball Qualifier which determined a twosome selected by their two day combined low net scores...

This year the pair that prevailed with their accumulated scores were Ron Huckaby who bettered his 67 on Saturday by lapping the field with a rousing 57 on Sunday for a 124. His playing partner will be John Pumphrey who shot a six under 65 Saturday and a comfortable 66 to total a 131. The 1st alternate is Jim Avansino (134) followed by 2nd alternate Mike Pisano (134). Huckaby and Pumphrey will compete against a yet to be named twosome from a yet to be named sister club in the Sacramento Section at a course to be selected by the NCGA. The winning duo of that competition will be qualified to play against other NCGA Section winners in Monterey in a two day championship event. The date and courses for that competition is June 24-25 at Spyglass and Quail Lodge. Other players with notable scores last weekend were; John Laveroni (135), Scotty Gibbs (138), Terry Beaudoin (139), Bobby Barger and Jim Maxam tied at 140. The two day low net qualifying event paid 9 places and shared the $390 of pro-shop credits.
On Saturday, players competed in a Background event which pitted all the players in a “Beat the Pro” competition against our PGA Professional Marty Davis. “Beat the Pro” at La Contenta is a win-win situation for the players. The usual $15 entry fee is the base bet against beating the net score of the Pro (Pro wins all ties). Players could optionally add money to raise their bet up to $100. Players that win will double the value of their bet in pro-shop credit and players that lose to Marty will get credited with the amount of the bet placed. Marty Davis did what he gets paid to do and shot a very competitive scratch score of 69. However, out of a field of 54 there were 17, almost a third of the field, that bettered his score. In the order of individual money that was bet; both Jim Avinsino (64)and Mike Pisano (68) added $50 to their $15 dollar bet and each were rewarded with $130 added to their pro-shop holdings. Low net score of the day went to Bobby Barger who carded a 63. Bobby added $10 to his original $15 bet to garner a return of $50. The accumulated credit added to the accounts of the “Marty” beaters was $930. That’s a lot of golf gloves!
