Calling All Foodies! Fair Entry Forms Due April 13th
Over the last 100 years the way we keep our homes has changed. A house wife is called a domestic engineer. In our home we have built in vacuums, microwaves and dishwashers. But some home making arts are making a come back. Baking and canning are more popular today than they have been in several decades. Some believe this new found popularity is due to “Foodies. A Foodie (sometimes spelled foody) is an informal term for a particular class of aficionado of food and drink. People all across America have fallen in love with food again. At the same time people want to know where their food comes from. Urban gardens are popping up in the most unusual places, tops of buildings, city parks and other creative places. These new trends are not new for Fairs. For over a century the “fair” has showcased the community’s best jams, jellies and produce....
Historically the Calaveras County Fair has had men and women who have excelled year after year in the baked goods and canning departments. One such woman was Dorthea Cooper a pioneer, who from 1948-1999 was involved as an active competitor at the Calaveras County Fair. She began by building feature exhibit booths for the Copperopolis Community Center. These booths featured products from that area. One year she was gathering grain for her booth and was bit by a rattle snake. On her way to the hospital she dropped the grain off with a neighbor so the booth at the Fair would have grain.
From 1966—1999 Dorothea was the most energetic participant in the preserved food (home canning) divisions. One year she entered 129 items. She was a first place winner 70% of the time. When she was 85 she scaled her entries back to 21. She often won sweepstakes and Best of Show awards. She and husband Horace raised their own fruits, vegetables and livestock on the family ranch in Salt Springs Valley.
The Dorthea Cooper award is given to the exhibitor who enters the most in the preserved food categories. There is also an award for the organization that enters the most items in the Home Arts Department. In addition this year there is the Cowboy Up award. This competition is for men only and the contest features, beer, salsa, jerky, salami and peppers.
Although the Calaveras County Fair & Jumping Frog Jubilee is the wrong time of year for the community to show case their produce. It is the right time of year to show off the fruits of their labors through baking and canning. Competition information can be found at frogtown.org. Entry forms are due on April 13, 2013. The Calaveras County Fair & Jumping Frog Jubilee is May 16-19.
