FEBRUARY’S ANYTHING BUT SLOW AT THE CVB ~By Lisa Boulton, CVB Executive Director

Angels Camp, CA....It’s been a busy month for the Calaveras Visitors Bureau. Last weekend I was in Santa Clara promoting Calaveras County at the Bay Area Travel & Adventure Show where we obtained 372 entries for a fantastic Calaveras getaway for two put together by Destination Angels Camp. Offering a free giveaway is a great way to obtain valuable contact information that we can use to market directly to people interested in our destination. The lucky entrant, the Reverend Dan Yeazel, won an exciting OARS whitewater rafting trip, zips on Moaning Cavern’s zip lines, a round of golf at Greenhorn Creek, dinner at Sidewinders restaurant and an overnight stay at the Travelodge in Angels Camp. The leads from this drawing will be shared among the CVB, participating businesses in the giveaway, and Destination Angels Camp....

This is a great example of the wonderful business partnerships that exist in Calaveras County. No doubt we will put together another great Calaveras Getaway for the Sunset Celebration Weekend travel show that takes place in Menlo Park in June.

Another fun project on the horizon is the California State Fair which takes place in July, but is something we prepare for well in advance. In fact, we are at the concept and design stage for our county booth right now. Each year, we design and build a booth for the exhibits contest and consistently win the Gold Award. We’ve also won: Best Visitor Experience Award, Best Fair Theme, People’s Choice Award for the Most Fun Exhibit, and Most Educational. This year, we hope to achieve another high level of recognition for Calaveras County.

The Counties Exhibits at the California State Fair affords us an excellent marketing opportunity to showcase the wonderful attributes of Calaveras County to thousands of fair-goers. Last year’s attendance was in excess of 691,000 people, up from 2011, with an average daily attendance of over 38,000. With fun and engaging interactive features managed by enthusiastic volunteers, our county booth may be the best way to promote to our target market and is an important component of the Calaveras Visitors Bureau’s annual marketing plan.

Speaking of marketing…. Be sure to check out our new CVB Highlights postings. We will be uploading these reports monthly in the Member’s Corner of our website so you can see the results of our marketing efforts!

And finally this month, I’m pleased to announce that I was invited to join the Calaveras Winegrape Alliance’s (CWA) marketing committee and have attended 3 productive and enthusiastic meetings. The CWA is in the process of implementing a new comprehensive marketing plan while redesigning their brand. It’s a thorough overhaul, and I am excited to be involved with this dedicated and forward thinking group. I have no doubt we’ll be achieving great things!

Okay folks, ‘til next month, this is your local tourism marketing representative signing off!
