Cub Scout Pack 343 Held a Flag Retirement Ceremony Last Week. ~By Wayne Douglas
Murphys, CA...The Cub Scout Pack 343 held a flag retirement ceremony last week. It was indeed a ceremony. These young boys are learning the proper respect for our nations flag, and consider it an honor that only a few have the privilege to perform. Our military, Veterans Associations , and the Boy
Scouts of America are the only authorized groups designated to perform this ceremony. It began with a uniform inspection at attention. The Pack leader inspects each boy's uniform, makes any necessary adjustment, and presents the scout with a patch acknowledging proper attire. Several of the scout leaders and parents then each read a portion of a flag dedication. The pledge of allegiance is then recited....

The 20 scouts ages 6 - 12 years old , then divided into teams of four, and stood poised in front of two steel fire pits. Assisted by scouts and leaders of Boy Scout Troop 343, each team or "Color Guard" is instructed by the pack leader to "Retrieve the Flag", it is carefully retrieved folded in it's proper triangle. At "Present the Flag", it is carefully unfolded. At "Display the Flag" it is displayed for the last time and at "Retire the Flag" it is laid centered over on of the fire pits. A Scout leader then folds the corners into the pit using a long pole.
All scouts stand at attention and saluting the retiring flag until it is gone, and the process is repeated.
The brass rivits will be collected and distributed to the scouts at a future pack meeting. This is the 4th year I have been involved with Pack 343 and they have had 3 of these ceremonies. I am always moved at seeing these young citizens learn the traditions that are so valuable to our country.
