Twisted Oak Winery and Prospect 772 Earn Spots on Wine Enthusiast’s Top 100 Wines of 2012 ~ Calaveras Visitor's Bureau Feature

Calaveras County, CA...Out of the thousands of wines that are tasted and rated by Wine Enthusiast Magazine, two Calaveras wineries have made the prestigious cut this year to be among the Top 100 Wines of 2012. But it gets better…both wineries actually made it among the top 50 wines on that list, which is published in Wine Enthusiast’s December 2012 issue.

So which wines are we talking about exactly? Prospect 772 ranked #30 for its elegant Grenache/Syrah blend, “The Brat.” I bet you’re wondering about the name.

From Prospect 772′s Website:

“We called this wine ‘The Brat’ because it is based in Grenache and Grenache is a temperamental grape that basically is difficult to cultivate. It wants to set a big crop but is fragile to the elements during bloom. It is a challenge to say the least, to control the size of the crop so we can obtain deeper flavors. We’ve blended in Syrah here to create more power and complexities.”

It may be a little brat, but it’s some darn good wine.

Then, there’s Twisted Oak Winery’s “Torcido” Garnacha, which ranked #50 on Wine Enthusiast’s Top 100 Wines of 2012 and received a 93 point score earlier this year by Wine Enthusiast reviewer Virginie Boone. Here’s what Boone had to say about this fine wine:

“What a wine. It tries to intimidate. At first, by its bottle size and alcohol level, but in the glass this 100% Garnacha is like a purring kitten—well a purring 20-pound Maine Coon cat, joyous in its pretty red fruit, and its earthy, meaty, vanilla and cinnamon toast range of goodness. All lush, Twisted Oak’s Torcido is, like a retro soap opera, brave and beautiful.”

Now, who doesn’t want some “retro soap opera” in a glass?

Some of you already knew there was some high-quality wine coming out of Calaveras and have been keeping this area a secret from your other wine-loving friends and family. But thanks to Wine Enthusiast, the cat’s out of the bag. Calaveras wine country is a force to be reckoned with on the international wine scene. Cheers to that!
