Camara Carries Sonora Wildcats in Rout and Other Local Action ~By Mike Quist

Sonora, CA..It was senior night for Sonora on Friday as one senior in particular had his biggest game of the season as the Wildcats rolled over the East Union Lancers 61-27. Senior fullback Brandon Camara ran for over 200 yards and scored 4 touchdowns all in the first half and played only a few second half downs as he and many of his teammates enjoyed some rest as the bench players played a big role in the second half of the game, with one or two seeing second quarter action as well....

The scoring got started on Sonora’s first possession when Camara broke through on a 38 yard run followed by a Sean Adams extra point. Sonora had their foot on the gas pedal from here on in the first half scoring again a minute and a half later after a Lancer three and out as Camara again had a big run this time for 47 yards but was stopped at the 7 yard line. That was just a temporary stop however as on the next play he powered the ball in for the score (kick good). So what happens next for an encore? Sonora catches East Union by surprise with a weak side onside kick and recovering the ball on the Lancer 33 yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, slot back Cristian Lapertche connects with receiver Thomas Erwin for a touchdown (kick good) giving Sonora its third touchdown in one minute and forty nine seconds. The first quarter came to an end with Sonora leading 21-0.

The second quarter wasn’t any kinder to East Union as Lapertche broke free many times on a super 80 yard touchdown run (kick good). That was shortly followed on their next possession by QB Casey Holman’s 39 pass to receiver Joe Maloney (kick failed). Sonora’s defense was just too strong for the Lancers as they just could not get much if anything going offensively. After Wildcat junior Ryan Puou’s 33 yard touchdown run was called back after a procedure penalty against Sonora. A couple of plays later, Camara broke free for a 33 yard run of his own for his third TD (kick good) of the game. After recovering an East Union fumble on the 30 yard line of the Lancers, Holman again connects with Maloney this time for a 30 yard strike (2 pt conv. failed) giving Sonora a 47-0 lead with still 6:26 left in the first half. East Union finally gets on the board on their ensuing drive by connecting on a 16 yard pass (kick failed). Here comes Camara once again with yet another huge run for a touchdown this time from 49 yards out (kick good). With some of the Wildcat regular defenders on the sidelines, East Union managed another touchdown drive and put the ball in the end zone on a 3 yard run (kick good) shortly before halftime and here go to the half with Sonora well in control of this game 54-13.

After an entertaining halftime performance of “Thriller” by the Sonora Golden Regiment Band and a nicely choreographed and nicely executed dance performance by a combination of varsity and jv cheerleaders we are ready for the second half of football.

Sonora gets the ball to start the half and goes down the field using up clock and Holman scores with a QB keeper from 9 yards out (kick good). That was the only scoring in the third quarter as the reserves were starting to get more and more playing time.

In the fourth quarter, it was East Union who did all the scoring. One was on a 9 yard pass (kick good) and on a fumble return for a touchdown with 1:56 left to play.

This is a game where we saw many big plays made by several players who we haven’t either seen or heard much about all season like senior Walter Leyva who had some big tackles in the first half and junior Brett McConnell who came in at nose tackle in the 2nd quarter and was in on several tackles and later laid a vicious hit on East Union quarterback Aaron Ramos just as he got the ball away. McConnell later moved from defense to offense when he replaced senior center Dylan Vogt in the 4th quarter. I hope that the coaching staff knows that they do have a couple guys that they can bring in to give the offensive and defensive lines a breather from time to time as they head into next week’s season finale in Oakdale as Sonora clings to a very slim chance for the post season but must beat the rival and league dominating Mustangs to do so.

Sonora goes into that game with an overall record of 4-5, (3-3 in league) while Oakdale is now undefeated this season following a 28-7 victory over Manteca.

The Sonora JV should be congratulated in winning the Valley Oak League Title on Friday as they also pummeled East Union 49-0. The JV team goes into its finale against Oakdale with a record of 8-1 (6-0 league).

In other local high school varsity action Friday:

Summerville qualified for postseason play by grinding out a tough victory over Amador 14-7.

Bret Harte (1-8) lost to Linden (3-6) 20-7.

Calaveras (7-2) lost to Argonaut (9-0) 35-14

Calaveras travels to rival Bret Harte on Friday for the bragging rights of Calaveras County for 2012.
