Best of Tuolumne County Awards Announced

Sonora, CA...At their October meeting the Tuolumne County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors reviewed all nominations submitted by the public for the annual Best of Tuolumne County Awards. Much discussion took place regarding each nomination and then a vote was held. “Voting is done by secret ballot and tallied after the meeting,” stated Chamber President & CEO George Segarini. “So many worthy candidates, but only one can be awarded.” Here are the winners of the voting...



Excellence in Government-Sponsored by Chicken Ranch Casino-Joe Silva, Superintendent of County Schools

Joe is universally recognized as an educational leader whose contributions have had a significant impact on public education. Most recently he was selected by State Association of California School Administrators as this year’s recipient of the Ferd J Kiesel Memorial Distinguished Service Award. Joe has been a driving force for the reauthorization of the Secure Rural Schools Communities Act.
Entrepreneur of the Year-Sponsored by Mother Lode Bank-Mike Albrecht, Sierra Resource Management

Mike is a longtime owner/operator of Sierra Resource Management business in Tuolumne County. This is a small logging company that has been sensitive to the environment while accomplishing the business of forest thinning practices.

Teachers of the Year-Sponsored by The Union Democrat-Ida Ponder, Columbia College and Kevin Jedlicka, Jamestown Elementary School

Ida was instrumental in starting the Entrepreneur Program for students at Columbia College in 2009. She also helped launch one of the first Social Media classes in California.

Kevin has been teaching at Jamestown Elementary for many years. He has a special way with kids that have behavioral issues. His patience and determination with children is exemplary.

Citizen of the Year-Sponsored by Cutler Segerstrom Insurance-Julie VonSavoye.
Julie is involved in numerous activities, boards, and committees throughout Tuolumne County. Recently she was co-chair of the very successful Meals on Wheels fundraiser at Railtown.
Students of the Year-Sponsored by Mocse Credit Union-TBA

Awards will be presented at the Chamber’s Annual Community Awards & Installation Banquet, November 15, 2012, at the Sonora Elk’s Lodge. Besides the awards, the Chamber installs new directors and officers for 2013: Chairman of the Board; Margaret Davis; Chair Elect, Wendy Gast; Past Chair, Chris Caldwell; Secretary/Treasurer, Pam Carrillo.

Cost is $50 per person or $350 per table of eight. Reservations for the event, including sit-down dinner, can be made by calling the Chamber office at 532-4212, or go online at www.tcchamber.com and download the application for reservations. Sponsors of the event are Black Oak Casino, Umpqua Bank, Golden State Cellular, Sonora Regional Medical Center, Blue Mountain Minerals, Oak Valley Community Bank and The Junction Shopping Center.
