October is Drug Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month for schools in Calaveras County
One of the goals in this program is to reduce drug use among students, thereby helping improve student achievement and success. Students in our county identify “having hobbies” as a positive alternative to drug use. To further this idea, the leadership classes at Mountain Oaks and Calaveras River Academy are hosting our annual “Natural High Day” on October 26th. We envision this day as a day of discovery for our ....
students, who would visit with a variety of community members who have set up “stations” on our campus to share their enthusiasm and hobbies with rotating small groups of students. Our goal is to inspire and expose students to many possible hobbies that create “natural highs”.
We have arranged for members of the community to volunteer for a fun morning (9 a.m.-12 p.m.) at our school site to help in this cause. Students will be rotating through the different “hobby stations” in small groups of about ten, with a staff member to supervise. We have asked that the community members bring items, pictures, gear, or anything else to enable students to get a good idea of what excites them about their hobby.
