Letter to the Editor on County Schools ~By Sharon Scotto

Valley Springs, CA...Dear Editor, Kevin Wychopen’s August 17th article in The Enterprise titled “Romney would dismantle schools” is a complete lie. The Enterprise should be ashamed to even print such a thing. Your assertion that the evil Republicans are picking on the “poor” schools is just wrong. Whatever happened to fair and balanced news? Have you noticed that all the agencies are cutting back? Have you noticed that Jerry Brown, a staunch Democrat is the governor? Do you realize that our country is 16 trillion in debt to the Chinese? Why don’t you pull your head out of the sand and look around. The fire and sheriff’s departments have been cut way back. The libraries are running on bare bones and volunteers....

When I went to school in 1946, I went to a three room school near Poulsbo, Washington. There was no kindergarten or nice playground. First and second grades were in the same room with the same teacher as were third and fourth and fifth and sixth grades. We had no library nor televisions, nor computers and calculators and no cell phones! We had oil stoves in each classroom for heat and the basement had no heat which was where the lunchroom and bathrooms were! But we still learned everything.

The old adage that money is the solution to everything certainly is not true when it comes to many things including the schools. Our country spends more money per child for schooling than any other country in the world and still our children are behind in math and science. Schools need more discipline. Teachers need more control over their classrooms. Maybe public schools would learn a thing or two if they were to emulate the privately run schools which run on much less money than public schools.

Dress codes are a laugh! When I was in school, girls could not wear jeans to school. They had to wear dresses with long stockings in the winter. Now they wear anything or practically nothing!!!

Another thing, are the teacher unions helping the children or hurting them? The unions are so strong that it is almost impossible to fire a bad teacher. That is not right!

Why don’t the Democrats grow up and stop throwing mud! I’m sick of it! We are all in this country together. Let’s act like adults and set a better example for our young people.

I think you should title this letter “Obama is dismantling our country!” The national debt is close to 16 trillion, the housing market has fallen apart, there are no jobs and private businesses are deteriorating and frightened.

Sharon Scotto
