Calaveras 4 Teen Center holds open house
Calaveras County, CA...After more than 16 months of meetings, networking and preparation, the Calaveras 4 Teen Center is finally becoming a reality, serving youth along the Highway 4 corridor from Arnold to Copperopolis. “We finally found the perfect location on Main Street in Angels Camp, easy walking distance from Bret Harte High School,” remarked Sue Funkey, President of the Calaveras 4 Teen Center Foundation...
The Foundation invites the public to visit the new center, a historic home at 172 S. Main St., Angels Camp during its “Raise the Roof” open house from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28. Light refreshments will be served. “The house is essentially empty and needs donations of desks, couches, computers, musical instruments, games, refrigerator and a television,” Funkey added. “We want people to come and see what incredible potential this house has for our youth. We hope that teens, parents, teachers and anyone interested in helping will join us.”
The center has three bedrooms, one bathroom, a large living room area and open kitchen, a separate office and a side yard area. Plans for the space could include a computer science/game room and library, a music and art room with instruments and supplies, a social room with couches, a large game room with air hockey, raised bed vegetable gardens and a basketball area in the back.
The Calaveras 4 Teen Center is made possible by a $4,000 grant from the Calaveras Community Foundation and private donations. The Calaveras 4 Teen Center Foundation has filed for non-profit status and has its bylaws and articles of incorporation. “We are ready to go public and get the center off the ground,” Funkey explained.
The Teen Center Foundation is made up of President Sue Funkey, Vice-President Tim Smith, Secretary Michele Rugo, Treasurer Tim Hildabrand and board members Rev. Lloyd Schneider, Dula Sharboneau, Kathryn Eustis, Dan Eustis-Smith and Jan Hovey. “We are also recruiting new board members and folks to work on committees, a well as volunteers to work shifts at the center,” Funkey remarked. “People have been trying for many years to get this off the ground, and it is happening now. Once we get needed furniture and supplies, we’ll open our doors. It’s very exciting.”
