Exploring Barbera at July Wines of the World....“New and Old World wines from Piedmont, Italy”
Murphys, CA....Join us on a trip to the Piedmont region of Italy, as we feature Barbera and Muscato varietals. Meet fellow Barbera enthusiasts, July 12th at the Historic Murphys Hotel, at 5:30pm, for a night of wine education. Winemakers Ryan Teeter of La Folia Winery, and Matt Hatcher of Hatcher Winery, serve as our hosts as we taste New World varietals made in the Piedmont style....
Barbera is a red Italian wine grape variety that, as of 2000, was the third most-planted red grape variety in Italy. It produces good yields and is known for deep color, low tannins and high levels of acid (which is unusual for awarm climate red grape). Century-old vines still exist in many regional vineyards and allow for the production of long-aging, robust red wines withintense fruit and enhanced tannic content. The best known appellation is the Barbera d'Asti in the Piedmont region. When young, the wines offer a very intense aroma of fresh red and blackberries. In the lightest versions notes of cherries, raspberries and blueberries and with notes of blackberry and black cherries in wines made of more ripe grapes.
Northwest Italy is the viticultural home for Barbera, but Italian immigrants spread it through much of the New World, where its acidity is valued in blended wines for the 'freshness' it imparts. Barbera is found in the northwestern part of Italy, particularly in Monferrato, and to a lesser extent further south. Nearly half of all grape vine plantings in Piedmont are Barbera.
Wines of the World is an integral part of the wine association’s educational program. Cost for CWA members is $15 and $25 for non-members. Guests are welcomed to dine at the hotel afterward with a $5 discount on each entrée. For more information, call 728-9467 or visit online at calaveraswines.org.
