Letter to the Editor on Speeds on Arnold Roads

Arnold, Ca...At our last Supervisor's meeting on April 10th, and after literally months of efforts by the County Public Works Department after citizen complaints, the Board Approved a resolution to place speed limit signs on Camanche Drive in Meadowmont. The legal speed limit by vehicle code is 25 mph, but other than a sign placed on Country Club just off of Hwy 4, there were no speed signs through the balance of Country CLub, El Dorado through to Rawhide, Rawhide at all, Camanche at all and none on Mustang....

Traffic counts showed over 575 car trips per day (on average) traveled over the counter and speed registering device (placed on Camanche about 1000 feet short of Rawhide) over a seven day period. The device further registered that 85% of those vehicles were traveling an average of over 40 mph in the 25 mph zone. Huge point of emphasis here-if this many vehicles were traveling at 40 mph when they hit the sensors-they were accelerating on the downhill slope so that they would be traveling even faster by the time they hit the low point of Camanche at the intersection of Camanche and Rawhide.

County Roads Department will be installing the approved signage along with additional signs "SLOW" ",Hill" or the like in the near future. Additionally the resolution will be sent to the CHP, who have the jurisdiction for enforcement and also to the Sheriff's Department for both their Patrol and Volunteer Staff review and attention. Although the speed limit was dictated by vehicle code, there is issue with enforcement when postings are not evident and or "reasonable".

This seems like a bit long in the tooth but - you have to live on the road and you have to see the near misses, the poor folks walking jumping off to the very edge of road when the speeders come through with complete disregard for common sense and of course the law. There have been near misses of cars rearending school buses stopping to drop students, hit wildlife (of course it happens at all speeds but...) hit domestic pets, (yes they should be on leash or under control but.......) and numerous near hits when folks are trying to enter or leave their driveways.

Most of us moved to the mountains for a better and slower pace of life. Most of us make jokes about "mountain time" when it comes to the slow pace of business response etc. We need to remember to just use common sense and slow down in our neighborhoods. Now those of you who don't care, who think the 10-20 mph over the limit isn't an issue-no big deal-none of anyone Else's business- get ready. This squeaky wheel will be demanding enforcement with citations until people get tired of paying the fines and simply slow down. I would love to not fear or despise my neighbors for being rude, unsafe and potentially dangerous (think deadly) simply over residential street speeding, down a two lane narrow road.
