Bret Harte JV Struggles while Varsity Finds Their Form Last Night ~By Scott Fairman
Bret Harte girls Varsity soccer capped of the first night of spring with a victory over Argonaut High. On a cool evening in Dorrah stadium, midway through the first half Lauren Redding uncorked a rocket inside the 18 yard box and found the lower, right half of the back of the net, who says defensive players can’t score? opportunities went unrecognized throughout the 80 minutes of play, but a solid back line for Bret Harte stepped up to the challenge to shut down several efforts on goal from Argonaut, including an indirect kick from just 8 yards off the goal in the final minutes of the game. Sophomore goalkeeper Jesse Stohlman managed to put a stop to Argonauts last minute opportunity and retain the lead.
Earlier in the evening, Bret Harte’s JV team struggled to find their usual fine form. A first half goal from Freshman Taylor Ryan at 30 yards out lobbed over the Argonaut keeper to the back, center of the net. The remainder of the game found several opportunities, but just not the right connect to bring Bret Harte’s game up. Late in the second half Argonaut capitalized on a direct kick just outside the box to tie the score, and then in literally the final minute of the game Argonaut once again seized opportunity just outside the goal box with the go ahead goal. Bret Harte tried hard to rally in the remaining seconds, but to no avail.
Bret Harte plays Amador on this Thursday, 3/22 at Amador.
