Homeowner’s Association Employee Arrested for Embezzlement of Over $25,000

Copperopolis/Angels Camp, CA... On November 8, 2011 Calaveras Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to take a report of embezzlement from the Copper Cove Homeowner’s Association (CCHA). The investigation was initiated after a CCHA internal audit revealed that substantial funds in the account were unaccounted for. It was alleged that throughout 2011 Heather Kathleen Vannatta (38) of Angels Camp, the association’s payroll/accounting employee, embezzled over $2,400 in fuel and over $4000.00 in goods from local businesses using the association’s credit cards and/or business accounts. She also allegedly over-paid her salary in excess of $18,000.00...

Sheriff’s detectives obtained search warrants during the investigation in order to review Vannatta’s personal bank account information. According to sheriff department reports Vannatta’s bank account statements showed discrepancies which corroborated the association’s allegation. The 3-month investigation culminated with a felony arrest warrant being issued for her on the charge of Penal Code 487 (B)(3). She was arrested at 845 Tuolumne Avenue, Angels Camp, on March 8, 2012, and booked into the Calaveras County jail, with a $15,000.00 bond.
