David Johnston...Now Working in Heaven's General Store ~By John Hamilton

Murphys, CA...It seemed as most of Bear Valley and the extended Bear Valley community turned out for the funeral of David Johnston this afternoon in Murphys. Parking was scarce on the south end of town and I even heard a tourist wonder if there was a special event going on. In fact there was...it was the celebration of a "Man Among Men" which was a phrase heard consistently to describe the man who's life touched so many...

Just Part of the Crowd that Said Goodbye Today!

General stores in small communities like Bear Valley occupy a very special place. In Bear Valley with Dave & Beth at the helm it was even more so. They not only provided service with a smile, joke, story or even a prank they were also part of the glue that held the community together.

The were the information brokers, involuntary baby sitters, business advocates and more. In many ways they came to symbolize the "Village" in the Bear Valley Village. The saying "It takes a Village" was true in person and spirit of David Johnston.

Friends, family members and more recounted story after story of how David had touched their lives. The stories were warm hearted, poignant, touching and examples of how all of us can aspire to live.

If one small measure of a man's life is how many people show up at his funeral then Dave truly was a man among men. He was part of the glue that kept life humming along at the top of our hill. To say he will be missed is an understatement of massive proportions.

The Ebbetts Pass Community laid to rest one of it's "Bears" and a stately "Big Tree". Thanks David for leaving such big shoes to fill!!
