Potential Scam Involving Residential Alarm System Installations

(San Andreas, CA) The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Department was recently made aware of an up and coming scam trying to be carried out upon citizens of Calaveras County. In an email received by the sheriff’s department on December 12th by a concerned resident, we were informed that a homeowner received a phone call of a suspicious nature. During the phone call an unidentified person told the homeowner that the sheriff’s department considered the location that they lived “a high crime area with lots of home break-ins”. The caller also asked the homeowner if they had an alarm system on their house...

The caller further advised that if there was not an alarm system, then the caller could install one free of charge. The homeowner promptly hung up on the caller.
Everyone needs to remain vigilante about scams and fraudulent deals. As the saying goes, if it looks (or sounds) to good to be true, then it probably is. If you should receive any similar phone calls be sure to get the phone number, business name, caller’s name, and any bond or contractor’s licensing numbers prior to accepting the proposal. You can then do some investigation yourself into the legitimacy of this offer by contacting the company and inquiry about the offer. If the person refuses to give you this information, or provides you with fraudulent information, then you know that the deal is a scam. Promptly report it to your local law enforcement agency. Do not ever provide any of your personal information (i.e. social security number, banking information, date of birth, etc) to anyone over the phone, internet, or in-person unless you either know who you are dealing with, or have first verified their credentials. Legitimate alarm installers and companies will provide any documentation or references you ask for.
