Avery Run 4 Music 2011 Was a Runaway Success
Avery, CA...A sunny & crisp autumn morning, combined with a supportive community and the generosity of local businesses, helped turnout another terrific Avery Run 4 Music on October 29th. And once again, course records fell thanks to some truly talented runners living along Ebbetts Pass corridor....
This year’s field of racers was a new mix of local runners combined with regional runners from Sonora, Columbia and the Central Valley, lured to Avery Middle School and its surrounding forests by the beauty & challenge of the Ebbetts Pass corridor. Engraved glass trophies for the overall division winners and medals.
Goodie bags were filled thanks to Fine Things, Big Trees Market, Save-Mart & The Red Apple (see links on our website). Music students prepared caramel and candy apples thanks to the generous donation of the Bunch family at the Red Apple and Lani and Brian Evans, Bret Harte Boosters parents. BH High School’s Cross County team provided timing devices and water station containers. Boosters also received donations from Paul Durante & Joan Dionne, and Dr. Muller DDS of Murphys.
Raffle prizes were provided by Sierra Nevada Recreation Company and Bret Harte High School’s wood shop class.
Volunteers included: course setter-Vicky Johnson, first aid-Marti Carter, timing-Keith Maurer & Melissa Johnson, set up-Patty & Paul Schuck, Ashley Varn, & Mary Boblet; tear down & clean up-Joy & Tony Littman, caramel apple decorating-Lani & Kenna Evans & BH music students, sound system and MC duty-Dave Allured, course monitors-Paul Durante, Lani & Kenna Evans, Hannah Mefford, Ashley Varn, Joe Lilly; & registration-Erica Davis.
Racers ran in costume again this year with the most popular costume prize awarded to seven year old Noah Cardiel, noble sword fighter.
It’s worth noting that not only did the community turn out for the race, but several groups are keeping music alive to make up for the fact that Vallecito’s instrumental music program is no longer offered. We are truly blessed to have our community step forward during these challenging times to support Ebbetts Pass corridor music programs. Dave Allured, Bret Harte’s music director, takes in younger students before school for a class he offers on his own time. Mic Harper and several musicians from the Calaveras Community band program work with students after school once a week. Youth musicians performed in a weekend concert held recently along with the Community Band. Mic notes she is seeing this program grow in size since they got started earlier this year.
