Letter To the Registered Voters of Copperopolis ~ by Michael McDaniel

Copperopolis, CA..Over the past month a movement to recall Darren Spellman as Supervisor of District Five has generated a lot of responses from everywhere within our county and beyond. The reasons have been dicussed and re-discussed and overall a majority of the responses have been in favor of a recall. During this time Spellman’s supporters have tried to scare the community by suggesting it will cost too much....

Has Spellman done anything egregious as queried by another Copperopolis resident? Well, I would argue that he has. His outbursts, name calling, spreading misinformation, flagrant lies about his fellow supervisors and people in the general public in fact meets the definition of egregious according the dictionary.

Has Spellman committed an illegal act? Hopefully not, however he has shown the community he lacks the ability to perform the job he was elected to do. His constant tardiness, missing key votes on the budget, not understanding the topics taking place while in a board meeting and then leaving because he wasn’t getting the response he wanted is sadly an indication complete lack of doing the job he was elected to perform. Part of Spellman’s job is to be at a scheduled meeting that is now only twice a month and to have knowledge of and be prepared to lend his advice in a civil manner to his fellow board members and not call them names or accuse them unjustifiably.

Spellman’s attitude “That if you don’t support him you don’t exist” denies most the citizens in District Five of representation. Has he committed an illegal act? No, but he has by his actions been negligent. Through the name calling, temper tantrums, not meeting the basic requirements of performing his job he has done a major disservice to our community and has left District Five with no effective representation. Crime? I guess it depends on what a crime is. Personally I feel it is a crime to not perform the job you are paid to do. But to the average person expecting to be served by a Supervisor and have them represent their community he is disappointing at the least.

No, Darren Spellman I have no vendetta against you, though I have yet to understand your personal attacks on my wife or me. Actually I just want to live a quiet life. Retired and doing the things I like to do. I have earned it. I have served my country well and would again if called and have worked hard in business However I have no desire to be a Supervisor and when this is over and you are out of office I will go back to what I was doing before it all started; Honey do this, honey do that and my own hobbies.

Your supporters are saying it will cost us to much money, well I think it going to cost this county ten times that, if you are allowed to continue in the position, in lost monies from support on the state and federal levels, possible law suits from people you will sooner or later offend, lie about and insult beyond acceptability and loss of credibility and cooperation from your fellow board members will just add to the cost of you staying in office for District Five.

You want to save this county money Darren Spellman. RESIGN. Get it over and face the facts you are not going to be able to effectively serve this community. By RESIGNING no election would take place and your position would be appointed by the Governor’s office. This was totally acceptable to you when you wanted to run for Congress, so why not now? Maybe not the best solution for us, however any other person with civility, calmness, common sense, intrigity, honesty and just plan decency would at least be able to represent this district and give it some credibility back. My message to Darren Spellman and any of his supporters left is simple; Save us some time and money and RESIGN. Until then I encourage everyone out there to find and sign the petition for a recall now.
