New Melones Fishing Report for June 27th~by Melanie of Glory Hole Sports
Water Conditions: New Melones Lake is currently holding 2,271,572 acre-feet of water. The lake level rose six feet again this week and is currently at 1076 ft. above sea level and 12 ft. from full capacity. It is now 6 feet lower than the highest it has ever been (in 1998 it reached 1085 feet). Water temperature is a balmy 76-80 degrees. Water is lightly stained with mud lines near shore. Watch for floating debris and unmarked island tops.....
Randy Cochran and Carrie Cochran-Entenmann caught two 5+-pound catfish on crawlers while bank fishing between Glory Hole Point and Angels Creek.
Trout: With the kokanee action so hot, few anglers are targeting trout, but we are seeing the occasional rainbow thrown in with a limit of kokanee. Last weekend's Kokanee Power Derby had a side pot going for trout, but no one caught a big fish- Kevin Jerricoff took 1st with 35.9-ounces for two fish (both fish were just over a pound). If you wish to target trout, fish 35-45 feet deep over deepest water in the main lake with shad-patterned lures such as Excel, Apex, Needlefish, or Rapala Countdowns, and use Bang or ProCure threadfin shad scent on your lures. If you are in the mood for a boat ride, head upriver and still-fish under the logjam. Bank anglers should head to local creeks like Angels Creek. Night-fishing under a submersible light has been good. We have a selection of fishing lights available at Glory Hole Sports that will make your trip a success.
Kokanee: Kokanee Power held their 2-day tournament on New Melones Last weekend. 182 participants had a great time both fishing, and at the dinner/raffle held at the fairgrounds on Saturday night. Gary Coe and John Lico won 1st place with a two-day, 6 fish total of 129.9 ounces-Their biggest fish was 31.45 ounces (almost 2-pounds) and 16 ¼" long! Jenna Smith won Junior Division, with two fish weighing a total of 44-ounces. Most found easy limits (although some anglers found conditions a little harder than usual- probably due to the number of trollers out there). Kokes are 15-16.5", and very feisty, fat and healthy. Troll 35-55 feet deep (some report action as deep as 70 feet) in the main lake, especially over shallower water around islands and humps. Most productive colors this week were orange, pink and green, and lures included Glitterbugs hootchies, Crystal Basin Wiggle Hootchies, Apex, and assorted spinners- not much action on bugs or spoons. Slingblades were the most popular attractants, with Vance's dodgers mentioned quite often as well. Always tip your hooks with shoepeg corn and apply scent liberally. Scents that are working now include ProCure Kokanee Special, garlic, Carp Spit, vanilla, and Gary Burns' special scent. Many anglers were using Berkeley maggots instead of corn. There is a lot of floating grass and debris in the water right now because of how fast the water is rising, so be prepared to catch a lot of salad while trolling. Upcoming derbies include Project Kokanee (July 9th, Central Valley Anglers (July 30), and Jackson Rancheria-sponsored $50,000 Kokanee Power 5-lake Mother-Lode Shootout on September 24-25.
Bass: Fair action. Throw top-water lures in the morning and evening hours. Spinnerbaits, jigs and Senkos will work better in the heat of the day. Target the backs of creek arms and protected pockets off the main lake in the early morning, with swimbaits such as Lunker Punkers, Toad Thrashers, Super Spooks, and Pencil Poppers. Later in the day, target main lake points with Senkos, jigs or other larger-profile soft plastics. Remember to practice catch and release.
Catfish: Now is the time! Catfish are moving into the coves and into shallower water as the water warms up. A sliding sinker rig, and a ball of crawlers or a piece of anchovy or sardine is your best bait.

Eric Pela of Vellecito caught an 8-pound, 2-ounce cat- He wins the Glory Hole Sports Big Catfish of the Week Contest. His buddy Ed Allendorf caught a 4-pound, 10-ounce cat. They were using live minnows while bank-fishing off of Glory Hole Point.

Crappie and bluegill: Look for crappie holding close to submerged trees where water and feed are running into the lake. Bear Cove and Coyote Creek are usually great spots this time of year. Use Beetle-spins, red and white crappie jigs or small or medium minnows under a slide-rig bobber.
