Mike Rocco's Story on "Shirley" The Pig
My name is Mike Rocco and I am a 17 year old Junior at Bret Harte High School. I have always wondered what it would be like to raise and show an animal at the Calaveras County Fair & Jumping Frog Jubilee. This year an opportunity became available for me to raise a market hog at the Osborn Family Ranch in Angels Camp so I jumped on it. I purchased my female ....

Yorkshire X gilt hog from the Westburg Brothers Livestock in Copperopolis back in January. I really enjoyed spending time at the Osborn's Ranch with my hog Prime Time, as well as my buddies Nicholas and Joe's hogs, working with all of the other animals, helping the Osborn Family, and just being outdoors.
Like my hog, I was also born and raised in Calaveras County. This was my first year in 4-H and I was a part of the Angelus Ranus 4-H Club. I have always been involved in my community and school; and have received special recognition for my leadership skills as well as academics.
During the fair and this whole experience, I learned so much and met so many new and wonderful people. I would like to thank first of all my good friend, Justice Rasmussen and the entire Rasmussen Family Ranch for purchasing my hog at the Livestock Auction. My proceeds will go towards furthering my education. Also thank you to all of the other buyers who came out and supported so many of the local Calaveras County youth, and those who came out just to cheer us on in the show ring or auction platform. Thanks to my buddy Vincent Osborn, his grandfather Tom, and the entire Osborn Family for welcoming me on the Ranch, teaching me so much, and being a part of my life.
I feel so fortunate to be able to grow up in a small, but close net community where everyone truly does feel like family. I never imagined how much a pink pig could change my life, but she "SHIRLEY DID!"
