Out and About At the Calaveras County Fair & Frog Jump Jubilee 2011 ~By John Hamilton with Video and Lot's of Photo's Enclosed
Frogtown, USA...The time when the nations and worlds eyes briefly turn to Calaveras County is in full swing. Great weather and happy crowds are marking this year's run. We took some time to wander about the grounds, check out the animals and exhibits and people that make up the marque event of the year hear locally. With it's roots in the Gold Rush era the fair and frog jump is not only the longest running local event it is also one of the longest running events on the west coast.

As the world becomes more homogenized we continue to lose our agriculture roots county fairs like our local one are becoming increasingly celebrations of a bygone era.
When you walk the manicured Frogtown grounds and take in the sights and smells of the county fair enjoy it!! It is a slice a Americanna that is like no other. Fair CEO Ray Malerbi told us last week that Calavaeras County is the last county in the state to close it's schools for the county fair. Our fair with it's bustling 4-H, Frog Jump, Exhibits and more is becoming an icon of a bygone era.
This may become an incredible opportunity for our county fair going forward. With it's combination of history, small town values and community spirit people and families from around the state may start making the annual trek to Frogtown an opportunity to cherish and celebrate many of the good things in life.
