Definition of a Locavore

Frogtown, USA......A Locavore by definition is someone who exclusively (or at least primarily) eats foods from their local or regional foodshed or a determined radius from their home (commonly either 100 or 250 miles, depending on location). Although trending now the locavore movement has been part of the Calaveras County Fair since its inception in 1893. A great example is the Cliff Lombardi Memorial Award, given to the champion beef that was bred by a Calaveras county producer......

Mrs. Pat Lombardi started the award in the late 1980’s after the death of her husband Clifford. Clifford and Pat had only been married two years when Clifford passed away in 1985. “I was overwhelmed at the funeral. There were so many people there. I realized he had meant a great deal to the community” Pat reminisces.

Clifford Lombardi was a lifetime resident and a cattleman. Pat wanted to honor his memory. It was suggested by friends Loree Joses and Rosemary Faulkner that she sponsor a special award in his memory. She decided to approach the Fair officials about an award for the champion beef bred by a Calaveras county producer. At the time there was a class for Calaveras and Tuolumne Beef but not Calaveras only. It took 2 years to get a class for Calaveras County only.

The first year there were 3 animals in the class. “Kid’s even from ranching families were purchasing their steers from out of the area to be competitive. I encouraged local ranchers to purchase better bulls and improve their stock” recalls Pat. “I really wanted a girl to win with a Hereford steer and by the third year Allison Ramorini won with a Hereford steer and I was so thrilled”. Every year I thank the Lord for the opportunity to honor Cliff this way” continues Pat. Those first years Pat would present the award at the Junior Livestock Auction and often the winner’s animal would sell for more than the Supreme Champion.

At the 2011 Fair, 24 of the 49 steers exhibiting are entered in the county bred class. Local herds are very competitive in today’s market and more and more junior exhibitors are purchasing locally. Fairs have always been part of the locavore culture, we just did not know it was hip!
