Dorothea Cooper Award New This Year at the Fair!
Frogtown, USA.....From 1948-1966 Dorothea Cooper was involved in building feature exhibit booths for the Copperopolis Community Center. These booths featured products from that area. One year she was gathering grain for her booth and was bit by a rattle snake. On her way to the hospital she dropped the grain off with a neighbor so the booth at the Fair would have grain.....

From 1966—1999 Dorothea was the most energetic participant in the preserved food (home canning) divisions. One year she entered 129 items. She was a first place winner 70% of the time. When she was 85 she scaled her entries back to 21. She often won sweepstakes and Best of Show awards. She and husband Horace raised their own fruits, vegetables and livestock on the family ranch.
Dorothea loved young people and was active in 4-H. She was also involved in the CowBelles, the Calaveras Tuolumne Cattlewomen’s Organization. She always had a plate of cookies for young people who were volunteering at the Fair.
The Calaveras County Fair is starting a special award in Dorothea’s honor. The exhibitor who enters the most in the preserved food divisions will receive the Dorothea Cooper Trophy.
