Sheriff Gary Kuntz Restarts Resident Deputy Program with Deputy Wayne Newnam

Copperopolis, CA...In response to the new administration’s renewed focus on community oriented policing, which focuses on the formation of problem solving partnerships between the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office and business entities and citizens within the county, Sheriff Gary Kuntz took the first step in realizing this goal by selecting and appointing the first resident deputy for the renewed Resident Deputy Program. Effective March 7, 2011 Deputy Wayne Newnam, a 13 year veteran of the sheriff’s department, was selected and will assume his new role as the resident deputy for B-Beat, which includes the townships of Copperopolis, Vallecito, Douglas Flat, Carson Hill, portions of Murphys, and the unincorporated areas of Angels Camp....

In addition to his regular patrol assignment, Deputy Newnam will assume additional responsibilities inherent to the position, including partnering with Neighborhood and Business Watch organizations, acting as a school liaison between education administrators and the sheriff’s department, representing the sheriff’s department at community events, identifying and developing solutions to re-occurring problematic/crime-related issues within the beat, promoting direct dialogue between the department and citizens, and collaborating with agricultural and ranching representatives to discuss related concerns. The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Department last utilized the resident deputy program in 2001. More resident deputies will be selected in the near future for the remaining three beat areas within the county.
Sheriff Gary Kuntz
