New Melones Report

Water Conditions: New Melones Lake is currently holding 1,837,645 acre-feet of water. The lake is rising fast. The water level rose an amazing 7 feet this week, and is now 1037 ft. above sea level and 51 ft. from full capacity. Water temperature has cooled a bit to 50-53 degrees at the surface- warmer in the south side of the lake and where there are creeks and run-offs. With the rising water, there is lots of grass and vegetation underwater. Watch for floating debris and unmarked island tops. The highest Glory Hole Ramp is now in use.

Trout: Pretty good for trollers and those still-fishing from their boats. Creek arms have been good, and upriver has been producing limits as well.

ny bass anglers are catching rainbows while drop-shotting small worms. Bank anglers will have best luck under the Hwy 49 Stevenot Bridge, or the south side of the lake, where water is running into the lake. Glory Hole Sports employee Gary Powell has been having good luck bank-fishing the south side of the lake, using crawlers/marshmallows and a long leader to get the bait out of the grass- very important right now. If bank-fishing or still-fishing from your boat, A sliding-sinker rig with at least a four-foot leader, a slip-float bobber and a bobber stop at 15-20 deep, or a drop-shot rig with a long (8-10 ft.) drop will all work, and help keep your bait out of the grass. In addition to crawlers, live minnows or minnow imitations such as Berkeley Gulp Minnows or Roboworm Alive Shad under a bobber or on a drop-shot rig has been particularly effective. If fishing with a sliding sinker rig, using bait that floats such as Berkley Select scented Power Bait, Power Eggs, or a crawler/marshmallow combo will help. Using a worm inflator helps too. Check your bait in shallow water to be sure it is buoyant before you toss it out. Use a light (4-pound) leader- fluorocarbon is best to fool those wary fish. Brown trout are active right now.

Kokanee: Done for the season, although we are seeing the occasional small kokanee caught.

Bass: Cooler water temps have pushed the bass down a little deeper, and made them a little more sluggish this week. Spotted bass start to spawn much earlier than largemouth, in cooler, deeper water.

Drop-shotting small shad-patterned worms is the most productive. Jigs are getting the bigger fish. Throw swimbaits when the wind kicks up. Remember to practice catch and release. The Department of Fish and Game does not plant bass, so it is up to us to maintain our bass fishery. If you do decide to keep bass, please keep smaller spotted bass and turn the big spots and largemouth loose.

Catfish: Warmer water will cause the cats to become more active, but we are still seeing some nice cats caught.

Crappie and bluegill: We are hearing rumors of the crappie bite picking up a bit. Warmer water will have them moving up, preparing to spawn. The prefer rocky flat areas to spawn, and will be hanging in areas adjacent to rocky flats that have water and feed running into the lake right now. Target water running into the lake, such as waterfalls and other run-off areas, especially near structure. Bear Cove and Coyote Creek are usually great spots this time of year. Use red and white crappie jigs or small or medium minnows.

Friday, April 1, 2011: ***Please join us in supporting local high-school senior Kyle Spence 's fundraising bass tournament on Kelsey Bass Ranch Pond. This is a great opportunity to fish this private fishery, with plenty of fish being caught, with a 3-pound average size. Limited to 15 teams. $1,000 first prize. Barbeque lunch. Call Glory Hole Sports (209) 736-4333 or Kyle Spence (209) 559-4132 for details. www.kelseybassranch.com
