The Merced River Plan Gears Up for Alternative Development

Yosemite National Park, CA....This summer we will ask you to help us brainstorm different ideas about how to protect the Merced Wild and Scenic River. To help you prepare we have begun posting information to our website. This collaboration will lead to the development of alternatives for the Merced River Plan. We will continue to add documents as they become available. Below is a list and brief description of the documents now available.....

DRAFT Goals of the Merced Wild and Scenic River Comprehensive Management Plan – Version 1.13.2011

The overall goal of the Merced River Plan is to protect and enhance the values for which the river was designated wild and scenic, leaving the river unimpaired for future generations. More specifically, the goals of this plan are to:

• Promote the river’s ability to shape the landscape, reducing impediments to free flow, improving hydrological function, and restoring flood-plains and meadows where possible.
• Provide opportunities for visitors to experience and have a direct connection to the Merced and its unique values as a place of reflection, education, recreation, and inspiration.
• Establish clear direction on land uses and associated developments in the river corridor, allowing for appropriate structures, such as roads, trails, boardwalks, etc., to support the protection and enhancement of river values.
• Establish a visitor use management program that balances the provision of high quality, resource related visitor use opportunities in the river corridor with the protection and enhancement of natural and cultural river values today and into the future.
